However, it wasn’t until recently that I truly understood the power of her iconic image – the one with nothing but a cape and a seductive smile.

After all, few superheroes are as legendary as Superman, also known as the Man of Steel. However, while Dean Cain’s portrayal of the Man of Steel on “Lois & Clark: The New Adventures of Superman” is often praised as one of the best, it was not he who caused a sensation online before viral content became commonplace. Instead, it was his co-star Teri Hatcher who captured attention when she posed for a picture in just Superman’s red cape, and even today, decades later, she reflects fondly on that “provocative” moment.
Reflecting on Dean Cain and Teri Hatcher’s ’90s superhero series that ran for four seasons on ABC, it’s likely the iconic picture of Hatcher that springs to mind – her slightly smiling face framed by falling black hair to her shoulders, a low-hanging “S” emblem cape subtly hinting at what’s beneath. There’s no denying; the image is captivating. In an interview with The Guardian, Hatcher shared the story behind this memorable scene, explaining:
1. Back in the dial-up days, I shattered the internet’s peace. I don’t boast about my greatness. However, I do recall that photoshoot, which aimed to publicize the TV series. It consumed an entire day. On that day, I wore a crisp white blouse and a fitted skirt, as Lois is a Daily Planet reporter, with the cape draped over. It was during the final shot of the day when someone suggested: ‘Shall we attempt the cape without the blouse?’ I wondered: ‘What could that possibly mean? Why would Lois Lane be bare underneath her cape?’ We did it playfully, but the outcome was captivating. As I’ve grown older, I still take pride in that moment.
Isn’t that just typical? She spent the whole day taking those photos in a certain way, but right before they were done, they decided to mix things up for fun. Can you believe it? Instead of being just an ordinary image in the series, it ended up becoming one of the most recognizable and, as some claim, one of the most frequently downloaded images on the internet.
Teri Hatcher now feels proud of that photo, justifiably so, even if we consider the doubts she may have harbored back then about it. Of course, she was well aware of the symbolism behind the famous snapshot and the reasons fans would attribute to Lois Lane being naked beneath Superman’s cape.
Back in the day, Dean Cain and Teri Hatcher had an amazing on-screen chemistry that truly brought Lois & Clark: The New Adventures of Superman to life. Even after the show ended in 1997, the idea of a reboot or revival kept popping up. Unfortunately, despite their appearances on Supergirl, they never shared a scene together. In a nod to their past, Teri Hatcher, known for her role in Desperate Housewives, paid homage to her days at the Daily Planet by attending Comic-Con dressed as Lois Lane in 2018, much to the delight of fans like me!
