In fact, all of Laszlo’s lines in What We Do in the Shadows are improvised, even Matt Berry doesn’t always know when he will use them. He explained:
“I did it for my own amusement and I’m still doing it for that same reason. When I start something, there’s no set plan or schedule; it could happen at any moment and I never know which idea might take flight. Whatever emerges will be spontaneous and unforced, but the result might seem awkward or strange.”
Matt Berry Breaks Down Why What We Do in the Shadows Works So Well
In contrast to many TV series that feature characters undergoing growth and transformation over season-long arcs, the show “What We Do in the Shadows” stands out due to its static characters as per Matt Berry’s perspective. Unlike detective Sherlock Holmes who doesn’t change much, the trio of vampires – Laszlo, Nadia (Natasia Demetriou), and Nandor (Kayvan Novak) – remain largely unchanged across the series’ five (soon to be six) seasons. This is not because they are flawless but rather due to their inflexible adherence to their established habits. Berry explains this by stating that they refuse to adapt or grow.
Among the few series, other than “The Munsters” or similar ones, is one where the characters are already well-established, without requiring much growth beyond perhaps Gizmo’s character development. Interestingly, the depicted vampires in this show maintain strict adherence to their traditional ways.
The sixth and final season of the television spin-off from Taika Waititi’s indie comedy film titled “What We Do in the Shadows,” which premiered in 2019, is approaching its end. This critically acclaimed comedy series has earned one Primetime Emmy award and received nominations for eight awards during its fifth season, including a nomination for Matt Berry as Outstanding Lead Actor in a Comedy Series. As the show winds down, the character Laszlo Cravensworth transforms into an overly self-absorbed scientist. However, it’s important to note that Laszlo was turned into a vampire during the Victorian era, which means his scientific knowledge is quite outdated.
