As a longtime Marvel fan who’s been through the ups and downs of the MCU, I can’t help but feel a surge of excitement at the news that Shang-Chi is returning! After his brilliant debut in “Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings,” it seemed like we might never see him again. But now, thanks to Simu Liu’s confirmation, it looks like our favorite martial artist is coming back for more!
It’s exciting news for Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) fans as the lesser-known yet impressive hero, Shang-Chi, will be reappearing in the MCU, according to actor Simu Liu. Known for his exceptional martial arts skills, Shang-Chi first graced the MCU screens in the 2021 blockbuster “Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings.” Although the film received favorable reviews from both audiences and critics, its COVID-19 release date hindered its box office success. With Shang-Chi not making an appearance in any subsequent MCU movie or series, fans were left under the impression that his moment in the spotlight had vanished. However, Simu Liu’s recent statement has brought a breath of fresh air to Marvel enthusiasts.
In an interview with The Times of India regarding his latest film, “Jackpot,” which co-stars his “Shang-Chi” colleague Awkwafina, Simu Liu has announced that a sequel for “Shang-Chi” is indeed in development at Marvel Studios. Liu didn’t reveal any specifics about the potential release date, production schedule, or storyline, instead jesting that such matters are beyond his authority. However, Liu’s confirmation marks the first positive update on “Shang-Chi” since its premiere, delighting fans everywhere. Liu commented:
“Much of it seems to be beyond my level of authority, yet I assure you it’s underway. I’m simply thrilled about the prospect of contributing to it, and I believe it will be spectacular. Unfortunately, I can’t reveal any more details than that.”
Featuring Simu Liu, Awkwafina, Tony Leung, Ben Kingsley, Meng’er Zhang, Michelle Yeoh, Fala Chen, and Benedict Wong, the film Shang-Chi officially debuted the infamous Ten Rings organization within the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). Although the deceptive version of this formidable villain was initially hinted at in Iron Man 3, it turned out to be a ruse featuring an actor named Trevor Slattery, portrayed by Ben Kingsley. A brief Marvel One-Shot titled All Hail the King later suggested that the Ten Rings were indeed part of the MCU. Not only does the movie confirm the return of its title character, Shang-Chi, it also leaves a tantalizing hint for another appearance by the Ten Rings.
While Shang-Chi Is Returning, The Eternals Are Not
Discussing Marvel heroes that have slipped from memory is incomplete without bringing up “The Eternals.” Directed by Chloé Zhao, this film focuses on an ancient race of immortal beings who’ve been secretly safeguarding Earth for centuries. The stellar cast includes Angelina Jolie, Richard Madden, Gemma Chan, Barry Keoghan, Lia McHugh, Salma Hayek, Kumail Nanjiani, and Kit Harrington. Initially criticized by viewers at its release, the film’s reception has since evolved. However, it seems that the broader Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) has chosen to overlook “The Eternals,” despite a colossal celestial corpse lingering in the ocean.
Although Shang-Chi is finally receiving his long-due vindication (as suggested by Simu Liu), unfortunately, the Eternals have been sidelined. Just last month, Kevin Feige clarified that the Eternals’ team name was merely symbolic, implying they won’t be returning to the Marvel Cinematic Universe anytime soon. In his words, “The Eternals will not be reappearing in the MCU for a while.”
Currently, there’s no announced release for Eternals 2. However, there have been hints at these events, as you might have noticed in our latest trailers. Some colossal creatures emerged from the sea.
