As a movie reviewer with a penchant for sci-fi and action films that pack a punch, I must say that the news of a new Pacific Rim television series has me more than just a little excited! With my years of experience watching everything from B-movies to Oscar-winning masterpieces, I can confidently say that Eric Heisserer is an excellent choice to bring this beloved franchise to the small screen.
The popular movie series, Pacific Rim, is making its way to TV screens next. Originally released in 2013, this film takes place during the concluding stages of a conflict where humans constructed enormous robots, known as Jaegars, to combat colossal monsters referred to as Kaijus. A sequel, Pacific Rim: Uprising, came out in 2018, and more recently, an anime series, Pacific Rim: The Black, debuted in 2021. It appears that the franchise is now planning a high-budget TV show from a screenwriter who has been nominated for an Academy Award.
According to Variety, screenwriter Eric Heisserer has sealed a first-look TV agreement with Legendary Entertainment. The initial project under this deal is slated to be a “Pacific Rim” television series. This series will likely follow an origin story, possibly set during the early stages of humanity’s reaction to the Kaiju threat and the introduction of the first Jaegars. Notably, Heisserer gained recognition for his work on horror films such as remakes of “A Nightmare on Elm Street,” “The Thing,” and “Final Destination 5.” He was also nominated for an Academy Award in 2017 for Best Adapted Screenplay for the film “Arrival.” Additionally, he was instrumental in developing the Netflix series “Shadow & Bone,” although it unfortunately had a brief run.
President of Legendary Television, Jason Clodfelter, said this regarding Heisserer’s new deal.
“Eric is a versatile and productive artist whose impressive history of both critical acclaim and commercial triumphs stands on its own. We’re excited to initiate our collaboration with Eric, Chronology, and Carmen in the creation of a new installment within the highly successful ‘Pacific Rim’ series universe. We have no doubt that their vision will contribute an exciting chapter to Legendary’s cherished franchise.”
Pacific Rim is the Latest in a Long Line of Movie Franchises Moving to Television
From the moment the first trailer for “Pacific Rim” debuted, it was clear that the movie had potential for becoming a franchise. Despite underperforming domestically, the film became a massive global success, marking director Guillermo del Toro’s most significant commercial triumph. Encouraged by this success, Legendary Pictures decided to proceed with the 2018 sequel, “Pacific Rim: Uprising,” with Universal Pictures instead of Warner Bros., who distributed the original film. Regrettably, the sequel didn’t capture the same magic, and was met with both box office and critical disappointment.
Apart from the brief animated series on Netflix between 2021 and 2022, there was speculation about whether this franchise would be revived in the future. While it appeared that Legendary Pictures might consider merging Pacific Rim with their Godzilla and Kong Universe (MonsterVerse), this seemed more like a dream shared by fans than a tangible prospect.
In recent years, franchises such as Star Wars and Marvel’s Cinema Universe have blazed a trail for other productions to extend their stories across both movies and TV series. This was once considered an improbable concept (with those who proposed it, like Ron Howard with his plans for Stephen King’s Dark Tower, encountering rejection). Today, we see numerous Marvel and Star Wars TV shows, along with Warner Bros.’ Dune prequel Dune: Prophecy and The Batman spin-off The Penguin on Max, and Ted joining streaming on Peacock, with their Friday the 13th prequel Crystal Lake back in development.
As a fan, I can’t help but speculate that the origin story of Pacific Rim could find its streaming home with Apple TV+. After all, Legendary Pictures teamed up with Apple for Monarch: Legacy of Monsters, and the two Pacific Rim films are already available there. If the MonsterVerse/Pacific Rim crossover is still under consideration, then it seems like a natural fit for our new series to join the lineup on Apple TV+.
