As a gamer who has spent countless hours watching reality TV shows and singing competitions, I can’t help but feel a sense of nostalgia seeing Carrie Underwood return to where it all started – American Idol. It feels like a full-circle moment, a testament to the power of talent shows in launching careers.
Carrie Underwood is having a significant return to where her career began – American Idol. Unlike her previous stint as a contestant, she’ll be taking a seat among the judges for the upcoming 23rd season. It brings back memories of the life-altering moment that happened nearly two decades ago, as Underwood shared an old photo commemorating the 20th anniversary of her American Idol audition. Her former judge Randy Jackson replied warmly to her post.
It was back in Season 4 of American Idol when Carrie Underwood beat out Bo Bice and the rest of the field to launch a music career that has so far seen nine studio albums, 22 No. 1 singles and eight Grammys. Now she seems ready to pay it forward, as she shared on Instagram those 20-year-old pics from her St. Louis, Missouri, audition:

There’s such a strong affection for this throwback, and it seems her innocent self didn’t realize the immense stardom she was on the verge of achieving!
One of my favorite auditions 👏❤️
In 2004, Randy Jackson seemed quite taken with Carrie Underwood, yet he kept his admiration under wraps, playing it casual with his comments (as any cool cat would). Both Jackson and Simon Cowell praised her powerful voice and commended her audition. However, Jackson felt that Underwood needed to focus on her stage presence, as she appeared somewhat shy at the time.
Carrie Underwood appeared unfazed by that note, given that the subsequent years have been marked by her astonishing performances in sold-out global tours. I’m eager to witness how her experience on and beyond American Idol will influence her critiques of the contestants, but it seems there are few candidates as competent as Underwood for the job.
The singer known for “Before He Cheats” is brought on to fill Katy Perry’s spot on the judging panel, following her departure at the end of Season 22. Interestingly, Carrie Underwood wasn’t among the popular guesses as a potential new judge; names like Jelly Roll, Meghan Trainor, Miley Cyrus, and P!nk were frequently mentioned instead. However, it was ultimately the Season 4 winner who was announced as the latest addition to the group informally known as the “ham sandwich squad,” alongside Lionel Richie and Luke Bryan.
It’s possible that she wasn’t the sole former “Idol” winner to be thought about for the role, though. Kelly Clarkson, who has been a coach on “The Voice” for quite some time following her victory in the inaugural season of “American Idol”, was mentioned at one point, but she dismissed those rumors due to her recent relocation to the East Coast. Additionally, Season 6 champion Jordin Sparks expressed interest in taking on the role as well.
I’m really looking forward to Carrie Underwood coming back to American Idol, but it seems like we won’t get Season 23 on our TV schedules for the year 2024. Instead, American Idol will make its comeback on ABC in the spring of 2025.
