As a seasoned movie critic with decades of experience under my belt, I’ve seen more office-themed sitcoms than I care to remember. Yet, when it comes to The Office, I must admit that I hold a soft spot for this beloved series. So, you can imagine my excitement when I learned about yet another international remake – this time, from the land down under!

It’s time for another adaptation of The Office, this one hailing from Australia. Previously, the renowned British sitcom produced by Ricky Gervais and Stephen Merchant was a massive success in its home country. When NBC opted to create an American version, it skyrocketed to international fame, now consistently watched on streaming services around the world. Alongside the already confirmed US spin-off, The Office is receiving yet another makeover. Although some fans may only be familiar with the UK and US renditions, they should know that the American adaptation is actually the second global reboot of the original series. So far, The Office has been remade in 12 different countries, making the upcoming Australian version the 11th.

Apart from shifting its narrative to unfamiliar locations, the upcoming Australian adaptation of The Office marks a groundbreaking move as it will be the first spin-off in the franchise to center around a leading female character, portrayed by comedian Felicity Ward. This new installment revolves around the Finley Craddick packaging company, where the managing director is Hannah Howard, played by Ward herself.

The Office Australia Is All About Working From Home

Regardless of one’s opinion on the rising trend, working from home has become a common aspect of corporate culture globally since the COVID-19 pandemic. Rather than regurgitating the same narrative with a different spin, The Office AU focuses on Finley Craddick as his company considers selling their office space and mandating work from home. Eager to assert her authority as a manager, Hannah Howard rejects this new policy and battles fiercely to preserve the office. The official description for this upcoming series goes like this:

At Flinley Craddick, packaging company, Hannah Howard serves as the managing director. When she learns from headquarters that her branch will close and everyone needs to work remotely, she switches into survival instincts, making vows she can’t fulfill to keep her “work team” intact. The employees of Flinley Craddick humor her and bear with Hannah’s outlandish schemes as they strive towards the challenging goals established for them.

In a twist of events, not just Australia is set to revive The Office. Earlier this year, it was announced that an upcoming US reboot or spin-off is making its way to Peacock. Departing from Dunder Mifflin, the forthcoming series will focus on a struggling Midwestern paper company who bring in unpaid interns to aid in keeping their newspaper afloat. As of now, further specifics about this revamp are yet to be disclosed. However, it has been confirmed that Domhnall Gleeson and Sabrina Impecciatore will spearhead the new, presently nameless series.
