Seth Meyers to Host Primetime ‘Closer Look’ Special After September Presidential Debate

As a seasoned gamer who’s been through countless election cycles and late-night comedy marathons, I can’t help but feel a sense of nostalgia when I hear about Seth Meyers venturing into primetime again. It’s like going back to my old arcade cabinet, dusting off the cobwebs, and diving headfirst into another political beat-em-up.

Late Night With Seth Meyers will move into primetime for a night in September.

On September 11, following the scheduled presidential debate, Meyers is set to broadcast an enlarged edition of his regular “Closer Look” segment. This extended version, named Closer Look Primetime, will delve extensively into the initial debate between Democratic candidate Kamala Harris and Republican candidate Donald Trump.

For the first time since the previous presidential election, a prime-time special themed around “Late Night” is scheduled to air, with Jimmy Fallon hosting a 30-minute “Closer Look” special in October 2020.

As a dedicated fan, I can’t help but eagerly anticipate “Closer Look,” a segment that graces our screens three times a week on the Late Night show. Known for its engaging mix of news analysis and humor, this segment has amassed an impressive viewership of over 3 billion on YouTube since its inception. In fact, the latest 12-minute episode from Monday boasted an impressive 1.6 million views (YouTube considers a video watched for at least 30 seconds as a view) at the time of publication.

Sal Gentile serves as the lead writer for the “Closer Look” segments, collaborating closely with Late Night’s chief writer Alex Baze and Meyers on these sections.

Just like “Late Night,” this upcoming special will be produced by Universal Television and Lorne Michaels’ company, Broadway Video. Lorne Michaels serves as the executive producer for the nightly show, while Mike Shoemaker takes on the production duties. In September, “Late Night” is nominated for three Emmy awards, including best talk series.
