Paramount+, Canal+ Expand Partnership in France

As a seasoned gamer with a soft spot for streaming services, this latest collaboration between Paramount+ and Canal+ Group has me all fired up! Having grown up with MTV and Nickelodeon, it’s heartening to see these iconic channels continue their journey in France through this partnership.

On Wednesday, Paramount Group and France’s Canal+ Group announced a broadening and fortification of their partnership in France, following the launch of Paramount+’s streaming service through Canal+ in the country last year (2022).

“Through this partnership, both companies are working to increase the availability of Paramount+’s top-tier content in France, enhancing the benefits that Canal+ subscribers can enjoy.”

Starting today, Canal+ subscribers enjoy free access to Paramount+, regardless of their current subscription package. This benefit extends across all platforms, including myCanal and the Canal+ universe on decoders and partner set-top boxes.

In the course of an expansion, Canal+ Group may also carry on distributing all of Paramount’s pay TV stations, such as MTV, Nickelodeon, the Paramount Channel, and Comedy Central. Moreover, they can continue to secure exclusive premium content for their channels and services, which includes airing Paramount Pictures films six months after their initial French theater release on Canal+, as well as at least two Showtime series annually.

Under the terms of this agreement, content such as the original shows like “Landman” by Taylor Sheridan featuring stars like Billy Bob Thornton, Ali Larter, Demi Moore, and Jon Hamm, “Tulsa King”, “Lioness”, “Star Trek”, and acquired series such as “The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon” Season 2 will be included. In addition to these, Paramount+ offers films like “Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning” and “Transformers: Rise of the Beasts”, along with others.

“Marco Nobili, executive vice president and international general manager for Paramount+, expressed joy over strengthening and expanding our existing strong partnership with Canal+, one of our major global partners. This new alliance expands the availability of Paramount+ to all direct-to-consumer subscribers of Canal+, allowing us to significantly increase our market presence through Canal+ Group’s platforms. As a result, we are projected to become the fourth-largest service in France, reaching over 15% of households in France, according to Omdia, Advanced TV, and NPA Conseil-Harris Interactive.”

According to Nobili’s statement, this revised contract broadens our partnerships in multiple business sectors such as linear distribution and licensing. Meanwhile, we’re gearing up for increased streaming popularity by introducing an ad-supported version of Paramount+ in France.

Speaking about it, Pascale Chabert, the head of content acquisitions for our main partners at Canal+ Group, stated, “We’ve hit a significant milestone in the long-standing, over 30-year partnership between Paramount and us.”

She determined that “Paramount stands as the quintessential studio in Hollywood, and Paramount+ is one of the leading platforms available. This extended collaboration represents another move by the Canal+ Group towards gathering top-tier content and apps in the market.”

Vivendi, the French multinational corporation specializing in media and telecommunications, is pondering over the possibility of listing its Canal+ division on the London Stock Exchange. This potential move forms part of a larger strategy aimed at restructuring Vivendi into multiple companies to mitigate the disadvantage of being a conglomerate.
