Can Todd Haynes’ Gay Love Story Be Saved?
As a fan who has followed Joaquin Phoenix’s career since his early days on “Lost Highway,” I must say that his latest antics have left me scratching my head more than once. First, it was “The Joker,” then “C’mon C’mon,” and now Todd Haynes’ gay love story. It seems like he’s got a knack for pulling out at the last minute!
Joaquin Phoenix has a history of abruptly leaving film projects at the last minute, such as “The Joker” in 2019, “C’mon C’mon” in 2021, and “Napoleon” in 2023. Despite these departures, the movies eventually got made. Recently, Phoenix walked away from an untitled Todd Haynes project scheduled to start filming in Guadalajara, Mexico on August 9. The production was already set up, with crews waiting for Phoenix’s arrival. Since then, rumors have been circulating about efforts to save the movie, including talks of recasting Phoenix’s role. Pedro Pascal has been mentioned as a possible replacement, but his schedule is full until the end of the year due to commitments for “Fantastic Four” and “The Mandalorian.” Additionally, Danny Ramirez had already been cast as Phoenix’s love interest in the film. Sources tell THR that having two Latino actors in the roles doesn’t make sense. There are also whispers that Haynes’ producers might sue Phoenix to recover costs, estimated to be several million dollars. It remains unclear if this will persuade Phoenix to return to the set, as he received a substantial paycheck for the “Joker” sequel and money is not believed to be an issue for him these days. Given Phoenix’s history of sudden departures and the fact that the project seems to have encountered numerous obstacles, it appears that this love story may unfortunately never come to fruition.
Carol Burnett, 90, Proves You’re Never Too Old to Pitch
During the premiere of the Bob Mackie biographical documentary “Naked Illusion” at The Paley Center in May, TCM host Dave Karger was engrossed in his own thoughts when Carol Burnett unexpectedly proposed a spontaneous meeting about potential projects. According to Karger, Burnett expressed her admiration for TCM and added, “I have an idea for something I’d like to do on your channel.” She suggested that between movies, they could air skits from her show that were parodies of classic films. Since Burnett frequently spoofed Hollywood classics on her 1967-78 CBS comedy series “The Carol Burnett Show,” Karger presented the idea to his superiors at TCM. Unsurprisingly, they were enthusiastic about the plan, and negotiations are underway to not only screen some of Burnett’s old film spoofs during movie presentations but also for her to appear on the channel to introduce them. TCM expects these parodies to start airing as early as December.
