Age of Empires Mobile's development process showcased at Gamescom

  • Age of Empires Mobile, the upcoming RTS spin-off, received a showcase at Gamescom
  • Revealed at Opening Night Live, it goes into the background of the game and its design
  • It offers a greater idea of what we can expect when the game releases

As someone who has spent countless hours building empires and waging wars across the ages with Age of Empires, I must admit my curiosity was piqued when I heard about its mobile spin-off. The showcase at Gamescom offered a tantalizing glimpse into this new territory, but as a veteran of the series, it’s hard not to feel a twinge of nostalgia mixed with trepidation.

Surprisingly, there’s even more Gamescom news for you this week! While we delved into various topics yesterday, there are still many exciting details to uncover. One such revelation is the upcoming mobile adaptation of the legendary real-time strategy game franchise, Age of Empires, titled Age of Empires Mobile.

As a passionate gamer, I recently stumbled upon an insightful showcase that delves deep into the design principles governing this game’s factions. It’s jam-packed with details about the gameplay mechanics, such as unveiling features like single-player dungeons and incorporating both Player versus Player (PvP) and Player versus Environment (PvE) elements. Although it’s a quick watch, I believe it offers the best sneak peek we’ve had since the earlier testing phases, shedding light on what promises to be an incredible gaming experience!

To put it simply, if you’re an ardent fan of Age of Empires or real-time strategy games in general, this new version might not excite you too much. The focus on strategic planning before battles and the presence of timers and resource gathering in the overworld seem to indicate a significant shift from the traditional Age of Empires gameplay.

Wololo

I must confess, I had my doubts about Age of Empires (AoE) Mobile. There’s an intangible aspect in Age of Empires that seems to heavily rely on its one-time purchase model, and a significant overhaul would be necessary to adapt it to the contemporary live-service strategy typically found in mobile games.

It appears to be skewing towards the negative aspect, but considering the Empire: Age of Man series hasn’t seen a new release in quite some time, except for IV, and remakes of all its earlier titles, it’s not entirely unwelcome news.

If you’re hunting for a fresh, pulse-pounding gaming experience, this one might not tickle your fancy. However, if you’re deeply into real-time strategy games on your mobile device, there could be some fun to be had here.
