Spooky Pixel Hero is the newest horror game in the retro pixel platformer DERE series. I’m a big fan of the previous games from this dev, and I was excited to hear about this release. I’ll start by saying how much I adore the simple, yet colorful pixel graphics throughout this game. From the unique designs of each level to the cool-looking blocky creatures you come across, the game is just very nice to look at. I like the vertical setting for the screen since the stages are well-thought-out.
You’ve got ample space to strategize your forthcoming actions, and the intuitive controls consistently perform admirably. Moreover, the sound effects complement the game beautifully, especially when played through headphones where they truly shine. Furthermore, this game offers an engaging narrative about a developer struggling to revive a misplaced platformer from the past that is quite unusual in its genre. Definitely worth checking out for a memorable gaming experience!

The developers appear to have aimed for a game based on creepypasta themes, but the control mechanics are what truly instills fear. They feel overly floaty, particularly in instances where precise jumps are essential. Additionally, the character’s hitbox seems inconsistent. Sometimes I can execute tight jumps successfully, while other times I get hit by enemies from distances that seem too great. It’s unclear whether this is a characteristic of an early build, but it certainly appears to be a strange bug.

This design choice is intentional and appreciated by their fans (including myself), as the increased difficulty aligns perfectly with the game’s dark narratives. The themes within these games range from isolation to self-destructive behavior, interwoven with jump scares, humor, and even moments of levity – this formula is consistent across all of their games, and it proves effective.
In this scenario, you find yourself as a child tasked by a peculiar and demanding girl to repair an arcade game that appears far too complex for its 1976 origin. The creators of the game remain unknown, and the girl’s intentions are unclear. As for your presence there, hacking away at cryptic code, it seems to be a mystery even to you. The players must piece together these puzzle pieces if they dare take on the intricate challenges presented.
1. The vintage style and ambiance match the plot perfectly, making it an ideal choice for fans of AppSir. However, I find it frustrating that a glitch from DERE Vengeance on mobile resurfaced in this game – the game disregards the no-ads DLC and continues to show advertisements despite my code for removing them having been redeemed. Oh well, I’ll simply wait until September to play it on Steam instead.
If you enjoy horror themes, have some skill in platform gaming, and can tackle intricate puzzles, then it’s worth considering spending a few dollars on this game. However, disregard the developer’s suggestion to use headphones at full volume as you play.
