The Batman 2 Gets Major Script & Filming Update From Co-writer Mattson Tomlin

As a long-time fan of the Dark Knight, hearing Mattson Tomlin‘s update about The Batman – Part II has me buzzing with anticipation. After the stellar performance by Robert Pattinson as Bruce Wayne in the first film, I can hardly wait to see what he brings to the table in this sequel. The fact that Matt Reeves is taking his time to ensure the script is as strong as possible only adds to my excitement.

Mattson Tomlin, who collaborated on “The Batman – Part II”, has recently shared some significant insights about the sequel’s production timeline with fans. In the role of the renowned crime-fighter during his second year, Robert Pattinson breathed new life into the character in Matt Reeves’ “The Batman”. This reinterpretation was a refreshing change after the tumultuous DC Extended Universe. Critics praised Reeves’ version, with some audiences even hailing it as the best Batman movie ever made. It garnered three Oscar nominations. The success of the film promptly led to the greenlighting of a sequel, with Tomlin once again working alongside Reeves on the script. It seems that preparations for production are now underway.

In a chat with ScreenRant, Mattson Tomlin discussed his work on the upcoming anime series “Terminator Zero.” When asked about the progress of “The Batman – Part II” script, he shared that filming will commence in 2025. Tomlin commended Matt Reeves for his patience with the sequel, allowing them to move at a comfortable pace and focus on creating a solid script. He stated:

“The film is scheduled for release next year. We’re getting ready and let me tell you, the expectations are incredibly high. This is the sequel to our first production, but what makes it even more exciting is that Matt [Reeves] is unlike anyone else. Over the past five years, I’ve had the privilege of working closely with him, and I’ve learned as much as I possibly could from him. Spending time with him is truly a blessing because he is a genuine artist who often struggles to create in an environment where art isn’t always nurtured. He’s striving to make something that truly matters, and I’m thrilled to be part of this journey. So, to be a part of the creative process and ride along, it’s simply amazing, utterly inspiring. I can’t wait for the movie!”

Originally planned for filming towards the end of 2023, the sequel to “The Batman” had to be postponed due to the union strikes involving SAG-AFTRA and WGA. Taking advantage of the unexpected pause, director Matt Reeves decided to move back the production timeline for “The Batman – Part II.” As a result, the film is now slated for release in 2026.

As Robert Pattinson’s brooding Batman reemerges on screen, eager fans also get another opportunity to explore the dark corners of Gotham City through Max’s The Penguin. This series, devised by Lauren LeFranc, brings back Colin Farrell as Oswald Cobblepot, better known as The Penguin. In the movie The Batman, The Penguin was a minor crime boss. However, following the demise of Carmine Falcone (John Turturro) at the hands of The Riddler (Paul Dano), there’s now an opening for Oswald to claim power in Gotham City.

In the upcoming mini-series consisting of 8 episodes, Cristin Milioti is set to debut in Reeves’ portrayal of Gotham, playing Sofia Falcone – the child of Carmine. Fresh out of Arkham Asylum, Sofia intends to seize control of her father’s criminal empire, posing a significant challenge to The Penguin. At this point, it remains undecided whether Robert Pattinson will reprise his role as Batman in “The Penguin.”
