Bhool Bhulaiyaa 3’s Rajpal Yadav recalls getting star treatment after Shool crew realized he was famous; 'Came in a jeep with six others, left in...'

As I reflect upon the journey of Rajpal Yadav, a fellow artist hailing from the same National School of Drama alma mater as Nawazuddin Siddiqui, his tale resonates deeply with me. Like him, I too started small, playing bit roles and enduring cramped vehicles alongside my peers. But, much like Rajpal’s character in Shool, we were unaware of our own impact until the crowd went wild.

I, being an ardent admirer of Rajpal Yadav’s talent, can’t help but reminisce about his journey in the world of entertainment. Back in 1999, he made a brief appearance in Shool, playing a coolie with just three lines, yet it was a start. But before that cinematic moment, he had already captured hearts as a key character in Mungeri Ke Bhai Naurangilal on TV. It was during this show that he became a household name among the masses. However, it wasn’t until the crew witnessed the frenzy of his fans on set that they truly understood the magnitude of his stardom.

In an interview on Ashoke Pandit’s YouTube channel, The Ashoke Pandit Show, the actor shared a memory about receiving special treatment when his fans showed enthusiasm for watching him. Looking back, Rajpal Yadav reminisced about filming Shool in Motihari, Bihar. Since everyone on set was from Hyderabad, they didn’t know about his popularity in that region. Consequently, they packed him into a tight vehicle with six others, unaware of his fame there.

When he stepped out of the car, a large crowd began shouting “Nauranghiya is here too!” as they gathered to witness Manoj Bajpayee and Raveena Tandon filming for their movie. He explained that one of producer Ram Gopal Varma’s relatives informed him that the crowd became excited upon seeing someone named Nauranghiya.

In this instance, Manoj, the distinguished actor, gestured towards Rajpal and asserted that he was the one in question. When Rajpal understood his fame, the team began to cater to him as a star. Rajpal reminisced, “I arrived on set with six companions in a jeep, but departed alone in a car, much like Manoj Bajpayee and Raveena Tandon.” During their chat, it was also revealed that when they were en route for the shoot, director Eeshwar Nivas sternly instructed Rajpal to speak correctly in front of Manoj Bajpayee. This is when Rajpal thought to himself, “Yet, I know him personally.”

Similar to Rajpal Yadav, many of us who graduated from the National School of Drama have taken on minor roles in various films. One such colleague, Nawazuddin Siddiqui, played a waiter in an action crime film. On my own front, I’m eagerly anticipating being part of Anees Bazmee’s Bhool Bhulaiyaa 3. This upcoming horror-comedy will star Kartik Aaryan, Vidya Balan, Madhuri Dixit, and Triptii Dimri. The film is set for a theatrical release over the Diwali 2024 weekend.
