Nesta Cooper to Adapt, Star in ‘MEM’ Sci-Fi Thriller (Exclusive)

As a dedicated fan of captivating performances and compelling storytelling, I am thrilled to see Nesta Cooper taking on yet another remarkable project! Her versatility as both an actress and now a screenwriter is truly inspiring, and her ability to bring characters to life never fails to impress.

Actress Nesta Cooper, who shines in both “See” and “Bliss”, is expanding her skills by also becoming a screenwriter. She’ll be adapting and starring in the sci-fi thriller “MEM”, which is based on the young adult novel of the same name by Bethany C. Morrow.

Based in Los Angeles, Marginal MediaWorks and Sphere Media are set to produce a book-to-screen adaptation scheduled for filming in Montreal next year. The MEM project signifies Marginal’s initial international collaboration, focusing on a scientist residing in Montreal who uncovers the ability to extract memories from individuals and transform them into creatures resembling zombies, known as Mems.

In my latest roles, I’ve had the privilege of working on “Cold Copy,” a gripping journalism thriller by Roxine Helburg that premiered at Tribeca. Additionally, I joined forces with Mike Cahill in his thought-provoking film, “Bliss,”, which features Owen Wilson and Salma Hayek. I’ve also graced the screens of Apple TV+ as a series regular on “See“, and I’m excited to announce that I’ll be starring in Ridley Scott’s upcoming crime drama, “Sinking Spring“.

“Cooper expressed his sincere appreciation for teaming up with a writer as productive as Bethany in a statement. Even though her writing often delves into intense, almost frightening themes, there’s an unusual sense of comfort in her voice. Her tales are so rich and vibrant that they fully envelop you within their narrative.”

Sanjay M. Sharma together with Milan Chakraborty are adapting the MEM project on behalf of Marginal, whereas Jennifer Kawaja and Peter Van Auker are producing it for Sphere Media. The roles of executive producers will be filled by Cooper and Morrow.

Among Marginal’s cinematic offerings, you’ll find “Kaminari,” a joint production with Bandai Namco (Japan) and helmed by director Mako Kamitsuna, as well as the suspenseful “Cypher” featuring Tierra Whack in the lead role. This latter film received the Jury Prize for U.S. Fiction Film at Tribeca.

The upcoming film She Taught Love will be released in theatres and on Hulu on Sept. 27, 2024.
