As a film enthusiast with a keen interest in animation and pop culture history, I must say that Donald Duck‘s appearance on Hot Ones is nothing short of magical. Having grown up watching Disney classics, I can’t help but feel a sense of nostalgia seeing one of my childhood heroes stepping into the modern world.

To mark his 90th birthday, the beloved Disney character Donald Duck made a guest appearance on the hit YouTube show “Hot Ones”. First introduced on June 9, 1934, Donald Duck is a cherished figure within the Disney universe and, at times, has even surpassed Mickey Mouse in popularity. In celebration of his milestone anniversary, Disney has been organizing various events such as an animated series titled “What If…?” for Marvel Comics, featuring Donald Duck on its cover. Some enthusiastic fans had the opportunity to acquire these special editions at D23.

Currently, Donald Duck has made an appearance on the hit show “Hot Ones” alongside host Sean Evans, where they both sample a set of five spicy sauces themed around Disney. To steer clear of any potential drama, Donald opts for cauliflower wings instead of the regular chicken ones. Known for his fiery temperament, Donald agreed to join the show on the advice of his girlfriend Daisy Duck and his closest friend Mickey Mouse was present to keep him composed. Evans acknowledges that Donald is their oldest guest yet and poses a series of challenging questions to him. However, Donald tactfully sidesteps these questions, such as his connection to Darkwing Duck and the gossip about him disinheriting his nephews Huey, Dewey, and Louie. Eventually, under the influence of the final, extremely hot sauce, Donald succumbs to his anger in classic fashion. You can catch the video below:

Hot Ones, one of YouTube’s most watched series, has gained fame due to host Sean Evans’ knack for posing thought-provoking questions while guests endure the heat of spicy wings. These videos often spread like wildfire, and even Disney took notice, promoting Deadpool & Wolverine on Hot Ones by featuring Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman on the show. The notion of pairing Hot Ones with an animated Disney crossover seemed like a brilliant match. According to Tim Pennoyer, Director of Brand Marketing at The Walt Disney Company, as reported in Animation Magazine: “

“Given the enduring presence of Mickey Mouse and his companions like Donald Duck in our cultural landscape, it was quite logical for them to feature on a well-known web series that often hosts famous personalities.”

In a groundbreaking move, Walt Disney Animation Studio is exploring the innovative blend of 2D characters and live-action scenes, a concept initially tested by Walt Disney in his early shorts like “Alice’s Wonderland” from 1923. The studio refined this technique in 1988 with their contribution to “Who Framed Roger Rabbit”. For the latest episode, renowned animator Eric Goldberg, recognized for his work on “Aladdin” and “Wreck-It-Ralph”, handled the animation. Donald Duck was voiced by Tony Anselmo, while Mickey Mouse’s voice was provided by Bret Iwan. A comprehensive list of the talented animators involved in this project can be found on the Instagram account of Jillian (Carney) Howell, who served as the production coordinator for Walt Disney Studios.
