As an analyst with over a decade of experience in the crypto space, I must say that July was a month of impressive growth and development for Polkadot (DOT). The surge in OpenGov activity, GitHub commits, and forum engagement demonstrates not only the maturity of the Polkadot ecosystem but also its resilience and adaptability.
In July, there were significant advancements and improvements for Polkadot (DOT). Here’s a breakdown of recent happenings in terms of open governance, developer interaction, and conversations within the Polkadot community:
These metrics and data will help gauge the growth and progress of the Polkadot ecosystem.
OpenGov Activity
2021 saw the peak of OpenGov Referenda events this July, underscoring why Polkadot is considered the globe’s largest decentralized autonomous organization (DAO). OpenGov serves as the decision-making process within Polkadot, enabling any DOT token holder to engage in governance discussions and have their views considered on the blockchain. By staking their DOT tokens, these holders can actively participate in governance on the Polkadot network.
In July, there were 1,134 distinct voters, and a total of 118 referendums took place. Out of these, 65 were approved while 29 were rejected. Unfortunately, 22 of the referendums ran out of time, and two were canceled altogether.
GitHub Activity
Polkdot’s GigHub has been bustling with activity, as shown by the surge in the total number of repositories within its ecosystem, now amounting to 29,917. The weekly commit count has risen by nearly 1000, reaching over 5,500 active commits per week. Weekly commits serve as an indicator of the development pace and intensity within the Polkadot ecosystem, offering a useful measure of ecosystem activity. At this moment, there are approximately 900 weekly developers working on Polkadot projects throughout July.
Forum Activity And Stack Exchange
On the Polkadot discussion platform, conversations about the Polkadot network’s operations are held. Here, developers and members of the community interact, share thoughts, brainstorm solutions to questions and proposals. In July alone, there was a noticeable surge in activity-related metrics on this forum. This included 161 new members joining, the creation of 89 fresh topics and 676 new posts. Additionally, the platform recorded 300,000 page views, 5,800 user visits, and 1,500 likes.
In July, Stack Exchange experienced significant interaction, as a total of 63 questions were posed, 39 of which received answers, while 23 queries remained unaddressed.
New Products
Agile Coretime
Let’s get started with Agile Coretime. All the cores on Kusama were snapped up, and one individual bought 51 cores at a single go. Despite a substantial drop in core prices last month, July witnessed a high volume of coretime sales, with 62 cores being sold to 7 distinct buyers.
The Polkadot Mobile App
Working alongside Raise, teams from Parity and Novasama are collaborating to develop a novel product: the Polkadot mobile application. Bjorn Wagner, CEO of Parity, previewed this app last month at Polkadot Decoded, with plans for its release in September 2024 on both the Google Play Store and Apple App Store for select users. The complete launch is set for September 2024. This Polkadot application aims to offer a smooth user onboarding process and provide a practical, real-world experience for new users, as well as increasing the utility of DOT tokens for existing holders.
Some of the new features of the upcoming Polkadot app are listed below:
Seamless onboarding
Fund your wallet
Staking
Real-world shopping
New APIs
As a researcher delving into Polkadot’s ecosystem, I’m excited to share that July marked the debut of two innovative APIs: the XCMFee Payment Runtime API and the XCMDryRunApi. The XCMFee Payment Runtime API simplifies the procedure for paying XCM fees by removing the uncertainty of how much to pay during execution, thereby enhancing overall XCM efficiency. Conversely, the XCMDryRunApi significantly improves the developer experience (DevEx) by offering:

Local XCM
Forwarded XCM
