Mark Hamill Was Disappointed With Ewoks in Return of the Jedi

Summary

  • Fans initially hated Ewok-filled Return of the Jedi, but Mark Hamill’s concept for the film would have made an interesting exploration of Luke Skywalker’s morality.
  • Hamill himself pictured Luke going down a darker path in the third film, and was surprised to find Ewoks in the script.
  • Hamill’s new film, The Wild Robot, is compared to Star Wars for its magic, emotion, and appeal to all ages, releasing in 2024.

As a lifelong Star Wars enthusiast who grew up with the original trilogy, I can’t help but feel a profound sense of nostalgia when revisiting the story of Luke Skywalker and his epic journey. It was fascinating to learn about Mark Hamill’s initial disappointment with the script for Return of the Jedi, as I too remember being a bit perplexed by those adorable Ewoks at first. Yet, over time, their presence has grown on me, much like the Force itself.

As a die-hard Star Wars fan, I once felt that Star Wars: Episode VI – Return of the Jedi was the black sheep of the beloved saga – until the prequels and sequels surpassed it in terms of audience disapproval. However, with time, the heartwarming conclusion to the original trilogy has been revered by fans, even earning appreciation from the legendary Mark Hamill, who initially had his doubts about the movie’s concept when he first laid eyes on the script.

At the Mark Hamill Live panel during Fan Expo Chicago this year, I was privy to his heartfelt confession about his initial dismay upon reading the script for “Return of the Jedi.”

As a devoted fan of Star Wars, I entered the final chapter of the epic trilogy anticipating Luke Skywalker’s internal battle with the dark side. However, I was taken aback when I delved into the script and found myself journeying to a planet inhabited by bear-like creatures instead. Mark Hamill himself expressed his surprise in these words:

As a long-time Star Wars fan who grew up watching the original trilogy, I had my own expectations for the third movie. Given Luke Skywalker’s new attire and black glove after losing his hand, I assumed that the film would delve deeper into his internal struggle between good and evil, as it seemed to be a classic trope in the genre where villains often wear black. However, when I got to the part where Ewoks were introduced, my excitement waned a bit, as I couldn’t help but feel that the cute creatures didn’t quite fit with the darker tone I had anticipated. Nonetheless, I continued watching, hoping that the film would still deliver an engaging and thought-provoking storyline.

1983 saw the conclusion of the original Star Wars trilogy with the release of Return of the Jedi. Following their clash in The Empire Strikes Back (a film known for its groundbreaking plot twist), Luke Skywalker faced off against Darth Vader, aiming to bring him back from darkness and restore him to the good side of the Force.

Initially, Star Wars: Return of the Jedi faced an excessive amount of criticism upon its debut, much of it aimed at the adorable Ewok characters that populated the moon of Endor. Despite this early perception, it’s now clear that Return of the Jedi was not the galactic disaster fans once believed; however, had Mark Hamill’s vision for the film been realized, it might have provided a more intriguing examination of Luke Skywalker’s moral compass and character development.

For many decades, Star Wars was considered the epitome of science fiction filmmaking. Even though the reputation of the franchise has shifted noticeably in recent times, being referred to as “the new Star Wars” for a movie remains a tremendous accolade.

More recently, Hamill has conferred his latest production with the title – a DreamWorks rendition of a cherished novel titled “The Wild Robot”. This movie, inspired by Peter Brown’s book, centers around a humanoid robot who finds itself stranded on an isolated island following a shipwreck. The robot, voiced by Lupita Nyong’o, navigates survival by forming friendships with the indigenous fauna, and inadvertently assumes the role of foster mother to a young Gosling.

During an interview while discussing “The Wild Robot,” Mark Hamill shared his fondness for the book. Hamill admired the enchantment that Brown crafted within the book’s pages, praising how DreamWorks and director Chris Sanders successfully translated that charm onto the movie screen. He elaborated:

“Take a peek at it! It’s like recalling the past when I was explaining Star Wars to those who hadn’t seen it yet. It’s lavish, it’s touching, and it resonates on numerous aspects. Children will be enthralled, and the entire family will find enjoyment in it.”

The Wild Robot
releases in theaters on September 27, 2024.
