Denzel Washington Reflects on Working with Tony and Ridley Scott

As a long-time admirer and follower of Hollywood, I can confidently say that working with the Scott brothers, Tony and Ridley, has been a privilege beyond compare. Denzel Washington, a true cinematic titan, has had the rare opportunity to collaborate with these legendary directors, and his latest project, Gladiator II, marks his second time working with Ridley Scott after their successful partnership on American Gangster.

Denzel Washington boasts a lengthy career during which he’s collaborated with numerous directors, including the famed Scott brothers: Ridley and Tony. Interestingly, Washington has only worked with Ridley once before, but his collaborations with Tony are extensive. The upcoming film Gladiator II, though needing no introduction given it’s the sequel to the 2000 original “Gladiator”, is attracting attention due to its star-studded cast. Among them, Denzel Washington’s acting credits stand out as particularly impressive.

Legendary movie star had a chat with Empire magazine for their “Gladiator II” edition and reminisced about reconnecting with Ridley Scott once more, since they last worked together on “American Gangster” over twenty years ago. Of course, this conversation also involved questions regarding how these directors compare to one another. Nevertheless, Washington chose not to reveal his opinions on that specific topic, but did express his views on both directors as distinct powerhouses of Hollywood cinema. To quote him directly:

As a seasoned actor who has worked with numerous directors throughout my career, I can confidently say that each one I’ve encountered possesses unique personalities. It is evident that they do share some similarities, but these are overshadowed by their individual traits. During filming days, I am fully immersed in my work, which prevents me from making direct comparisons between directors. However, it’s undeniable that both Scotts, past and present, are exceptional filmmakers who consistently deliver great work. They never miss the mark.

Additionally, Washington shared that his primary motivation for joining the cast of “Gladiator II” was the opportunity to collaborate with Scott once more. It seems as though some connections are destined, and having a talent like Washington on board undoubtedly boosts the film’s already significant chances at winning an Oscar.

Prior to his sad demise in 2012, Tony Scott often worked closely with directors in Washington. Notably, he acted in five out of the director’s 16 movies, beginning with “Crimson Tide” in 1995.

Initially, Scott directed several films absent Washington, such as ‘The Fan’, ‘Enemy of the State’, and ‘Spy Game’. Notably, these included collaborations with actors like Wesley Snipes, Robert De Niro, Will Smith, Gene Hackman, Brad Pitt, and Robert Redford. Later on, Washington rejoined Scott for the critically praised film ‘Man on Fire’. In his final three projects, Washington appeared in all of them: ‘Déjá Vu’, ‘The Taking of Pelham 123’, and ‘Unstoppable’.

The actor who played the lead role in “Training Day” has only collaborated with Ridley Scott on one film before, “American Gangster,” released back in 2007. Over the past 17 years, both Washington and Scott have achieved significant success in their respective careers. Their reunion for “Gladiator II” promises to be another impressive addition to the film resumes of these two iconic Hollywood figures.
