Movie” boasts an impressive ensemble of well-known actors such as Chris Pratt, Jack Black, Anya Taylor-Joy, and Charlie Day. This upcoming cinematic outing promises to bring the legendary mustached character to life on the big screen. Following the disappointing critical and commercial reception of the 1993 live-action film “Super Mario Bros.“, fans of the franchise and Nintendo can now look forward to a faithful adaptation of the classic video game.
Despite receiving a mixed reaction from film critics, “The Super Mario Bros. Movie” left audiences in awe of its cinematic grandeur and earned an impressive A rating from CinemaScore. The film went on to generate over $1.3 billion at global box offices.
As a lifelong gamer and film enthusiast, I can honestly say that the adaptation of the popular video game into a feature film was nothing short of spectacular. Not only did it become the first video game-based movie to gross over a billion dollars at the box office, but it also secured the second highest spot for releases that year and even earned a Golden Globe nomination for Best Animated Feature.
12 “You just got Luigi’d!” – Luigi
In the movie, it was evident that Luigi (Charlie Day) deeply cared for his older brother Mario, and the viewers could feel his devotion. Unfortunately, Luigi found himself in a difficult situation when he got transported to the Dark Lands following a trip through a Warp Pipe. Later, Bowser imprisoned him above bubbling lava, leaving him to hope for rescue. The only entity Luigi could converse with was the disheartened and pessimistic Lumalee, who wasn’t exactly a source of positivity.
Luigi Gets His Own Zippy Expression
Eventually, in the movie, Luigi manages to uncover his self-assurance and unearth his inner hero, aiding his older brother in the rescue mission and safeguarding Brooklyn city and its inhabitants from Bowser. When he initially steps into the ominous and eerie Dark Lands, Luigi is filled with fear due to the foreboding ambiance, and encounters some harmful minions at a graveyard teeming with skeletons. Following what appears to be disarming these creatures, Luigi proudly exclaims, “You’ve just been outsmarted by Luigi!“, though his triumph doesn’t last long.
11 “Love really makes a guy come out of his shell.” – Bowser
In the movie “The Super Mario Bros.”, Bowser underwent a significant transformation from his previous grumpy and malicious self to a funnier (yet still sinister) character. The casting of Jack Black as Bowser’s voice in the adaptation brought even more enjoyment, and his enormous self-delusion and inflated ego made him stand out, particularly during his shameless attempts to win over Peach.
Bowser’s Painfully Embarrassing Pun
Trying to charm a woman who might not know his true nature (since he is actually quite villainous), Bowser makes an effort to win over Peach when they finally come face-to-face, as he visits the Mushroom Kingdom in his airborne fortress.
When Bowser faces off against Princess Peach and the frightened subjects of her kingdom, he communicates to the feisty princess that he delivered the Super Star as a token of his affection, humorously remarking, “Love makes a man step out of his comfort zone.” Unsurprisingly, Peach isn’t receptive to his romantic proclamation, causing Bowser to scold his assistant Kamek for his ill-timed cheesy line.
10 “Not bad, Mustache.” – Princess Peach
In the updated version, Princess Peach’s character underwent significant transformation, shifting from a stereotypical damsel-in-distress to a strong and skilled combatant.
In a thrilling twist that caught my breath, the filmmakers of “The Super Mario Bros. Movie” decided to swap roles between Princess Peach and Luigi. Instead of Mario coming to the rescue, it’s his younger brother who needs saving! Bowser snatches Luigi in this tale, leaving the Mushroom Kingdom in peril. Upon meeting her for the first time, I was astounded by Peach’s bravery and combat prowess. She stands tall as a fearless leader, prepared to take on Bowser to protect her beloved kingdom.
A Fun & Flirty Exchange
In the Mushroom Kingdom, Mario finds himself captivated by Princess Peach upon arrival. He embarks on an adventurous quest, aiming to learn, train, and prepare for confronting Bowser, all in a bid to save his brother Luigi. As their journey unfolds, there’s a palpable chemistry between the iconic duo, leaving viewers intrigued as they witness them developing feelings for each other. The sparks between Peach and Mario escalate when she manages to shrink Bowser and locks him away. They then exchange playful banter that hints at their growing affection.
9 “Sit, jam with me.” – Bowser
It would have been a real shame if Jack Black hadn’t had an opportunity to demonstrate his musical skills in this amusing remake. Fortunately, he got the chance to sing “Peaches,” showcasing his vocal abilities. When Kamek, Bowser’s minion, informs him that Peach has been training Mario and might be plotting something, a frustrated Bowser asks Kamek to join him for some music, using singing as a means to control his anger instead.
Bowser Breaks Out Into Song
1) In his energetic performance, Bowser let loose with a powerful serenade, channeling his inner rock legend. Meanwhile, Kamek amusingly dressed up as a blonde-wigged, pink-dressed impersonator of the princess. However, prior to launching into song, Bowser teased by playing a brief version of the Underground theme and forcefully slamming the piano lid onto Kamek’s hands, causing him discomfort.
The exchange showed just how unhinged and angry Bowser was over the arrival of Mario, as well as his unreciprocated romantic feelings for Peach.
8 “It is on…like Donkey Kong!” – Donkey Kong
In a delightful performance, Seth Rogen embodied the endearing spirit and signature wit as he voiced the anthropomorphic gorilla Donkey Kong. This character yearns to win over his grumpy father Cranky Kong (played by Fred Armisen), while also demonstrating his tremendous power.
With Bowser’s wicked scheme about to unfold, Princess Peach, Mario, and Toad embark on a journey to the Jungle Kingdom in search of allies. However, Cranky Kong insists on joining their battle against Bowser, but only if Mario manages to defeat Donkey Kong first.
An Animated Reimagining of David vs. Goliath
In this scenario, although the colossal gorilla appears much stronger and more daunting than Mario, the determined hero bravely decides to engage him in an incredible battle. Just before charging at Mario with full force, D.K. shouts, “Let’s go…like Donkey Kong!“. After a tough fight where he ends up bruised and beaten, our beloved character manages to defeat D.K. by using his wit and agility provided by the Cat Suit, ensuring their assistance in battling Bowser.
7 “Mama Mia!” – Mario
In a memorable homage to the classic video games, Mario’s famous exclamation “Mama Mia” made its big-screen debut. This phrase, familiar to fans of the cherished game, is uttered whenever Mario accomplishes a goal or displays an impressive feat. The quote playfully punctuates the movie at key moments, adding humor to both lighthearted and serious scenes.
Mario Loves His Signature Saying
Following their plumbing assignment at an upscale apartment belonging to a well-off lady and her pet dog, Mario exclaims his famous phrase upon the nuisance canine causing pipe ruptures, leading to extensive damage.
He uses that phrase as he explores filthy sewers, marvels at the Mushroom Kingdom, and fights against the powerful Donkey Kong (and a few others). The film subtly included this quote, and every time it appeared, viewers couldn’t help but smile in joy.
6 “The only hope is the sweet relief of death.” – Lumalee
Among the unforgettable, comical, and oddly enchanting characters in one of the box office sensations, there’s no denying that Lumalee (played by Juliet Jelenic), the blue-starred nihilist held captive by Bowser, stands out. Despite his innocent, childlike tone of voice, the things he says are far from cheerful and light, as they often reflect a dark and somber worldview.
In a surprising twist, Lumalee’s dark reflections among the prison inmates kept everyone alert, yet cinematic spectators found themselves chuckling at the deep thoughts he shared. These thoughts, though, seemed to clash dramatically with Lumalee’s cheerful and playful persona.
Lumalee’s Dreary Musings
In the screen, Lumalee skillfully creates an atmosphere of gloom, causing fellow captives to feel unease. He shares a chilling, morbid remark, accompanied by a disquieting chuckle and smile. This elicited a groan from the frightened group, enhancing the quote’s impact and amusement factor. Though not a central character in the movie, Lumalee effectively and humorously dominated every scene he appeared in.
5 “That is but a taste of our fury.” – King Penguin
Khary Payton, who portrays the valiant yet diminutive King Penguin, was among the pioneers ready to take charge, leading his troops into combat against the formidable forces of Bowser.
In a rather humorous non-climax, the fierce, azure sovereign and his endearing troops relentlessly hurled snowballs at their adversaries, only for it to be an unexpectedly tame event. Then, with grace, King Penguin advanced and inquired of Bower, “Is that merely a hint of our wrath? Do you surrender?” This moment demonstrated the unyielding bravery and fearlessness of King Penguin despite being vastly outmatched.
King Penguin Doesn’t Lose His Cool
King Penguins carry an air of tranquility and self-assurance, never questioning the resilience of their loyal troops, prepared to confront unimaginable fear in their valiant efforts to safeguard their cherished dominion.
From my perspective as a film enthusiast, the scene was a riot, largely due to the character’s deadpan delivery of an otherwise serious line. It was like watching Bowser trying not to laugh out loud because he could sense King Penguin’s kingdom was on the verge of collapse. The character exuded a remarkable determination and a ‘can-do’ spirit that was both inspiring and hilarious.
4 “That is how you princess!” – Toad
In “The Super Mario Bros. Movie”, the faithful and daring companion Toad (played by Keegan-Michael Key) stands steadfastly loyal to Princess Peach and Mario. He’s ready to go the extra mile to aid them in defeating Bowser, safeguarding the Mushroom Kingdom. This resilient and sincere character is an unwavering supporter of Peach, constantly boosting and inspiring his friends throughout their adventure. Despite encountering Bowser and his intimidating minions, Toad never wavers in his commitment to stay by their side.
Peach Dazzles on Rainbow Road
Following Mario’s victory in his duel with Donkey Kong, Mario, Peach, Toad, and themselves (the Kongs) set out towards a confrontation with Bowser. They choose to travel along the path of Rainbow Road.
When Bowser’s army and Koopa General launch an attack, Princess Peach demonstrates remarkable driving abilities by skillfully dodging them. This leaves Toad, her passenger, amazed and impressed. He praises Peach for her exceptional combat skills and bravery, exclaiming enthusiastically, “You’re a real princess there!“.
3 “Peaches, Peaches, Peaches, Peaches, Peaches!” – Bowser
Nothing compares to the fierce anger of Bowser being spurned, and the infamous adversary’s relentless affection for Princess Peach in “The Super Mario Bros. Movie” swiftly shifts from charming to embarrassing within an instant. Jack Black gave a remarkable portrayal as the love-struck antagonist, who passionately declares his undying love and loyalty to the compassionate princess in the chart-topping song “Peaches.”
Even though Bowser had warned that he would ruin Princess Peach’s cherished Mushroom Kingdom if she declined his proposal, he remained hopeful about winning her heart nonetheless.
Bowser Steals the Show With Love Ballad
It was actually Black who conceived the unique concept of Bowser singing a love ballad about Peach, and this renowned actor even helped pen the catchy melody. In the heartfelt song, Bowser soulfully sings “Peaches, Peaches, Peaches, Peaches, Peaches“. The musical number, where he vows to love her eternally, has been acclaimed as a standout moment by many critics, making it one of the most memorable scenes in the hit animated movie.
After the movie ended, people just couldn’t stop thinking about the song “Peaches.” In fact, it was nominated for a Golden Globe in the category of Best Original Song.
2 “Let’s-a Go!” – Mario
Since the film The Super Mario Bros. Movie was inspired by the groundbreaking video game series, viewers were eagerly waiting for the brothers to utter their famous phrases in the movie version. However, Chris Pratt’s portrayal of Mario faced some initial criticism from fans, but he admirably took on the challenge of emulating the character’s original actor Charles Martinet. To this query, Lumalee offered a bleak and despairing philosophical perspective: “Time, much like hope, is an illusion.”
Lumalee Continues to Inspire Dread
It’s clear that Luigi’s question received a sad and gloomy response from Lumalee, which made the worried character realize the grave danger they were actually facing.
In an unusual twist for a kids’ film, Lumalee’s profound insights and heavy feelings of despair stood out, though the mature viewers admired his ability to foresee events. It’s intriguing to ponder about Lumalee’s past in potential sequels, uncovering what led to his cynical disposition.
