As a long-time Dragon Ball enthusiast, I must say that the Kamehameha is undoubtedly one of the most iconic techniques in anime history! It’s fascinating to see how this humble energy wave has evolved over the years and become synonymous with our beloved characters.
In the Dragon Ball universe, the Kamehameha Wave stands out as a signature move, frequently employed as a finishing attack across numerous episodes. This destructive technique is named after King Kamehameha of Hawaii and involves the user cupping their hands to gather ki energy, which is then released as a potent energy bolt. Over the course of the series, several versions of this attack have made appearances.
As a seasoned gamer who has spent countless hours immersed in various video games, I can confidently say that there are certain moves or techniques that become synonymous with certain characters. Some of these moves are so iconic, they even serve as the character’s signature. However, it’s not uncommon to find other characters also having the ability to execute these moves. It adds an interesting dynamic to the gameplay and keeps things fresh.
In this series, certain characters employ the fusion ability selectively, often in conjunction with another user. On other occasions, they exhibit the power primarily in spin-off content such as video games. Interestingly, even characters who possess the ability to unleash an attack similar to the Kamehameha may end up being the ones receiving its impact.

12 Master Roshi
Master Roshi plays a crucial role in the Kamehameha technique because he was the one who invented it over a span of fifty years. Although the move bears the name of King Kamehameha I, it also symbolizes Roshi’s fondness for turtles, as “kame” translates to turtle and “ha” means wave in Japanese.
The Technique’s Creator
Over time, Roshi has created several adaptations of the original technique. One particularly well-known example is the Moon-Destroying Kamehameha, where, under the guise of Jackie Chun, Roshi destroys the moon in order to break Goku’s Great Ape transformation.
11 Grandpa Gohan
In his youth, Goku’s cherished grandfather, affectionately known as Grandpa Gohan, studied martial arts under Master Roshi, just like Ox-King did. Their training methods were similar to those that both Goku and Krillin went through later on. Moreover, Grandpa Gohan learned the Kamehameha technique, a powerful energy wave attack.

In the Fortuneteller Baba arc, I was left in awe when the sorceress orchestrated a fight between Goku and an enigmatic masked opponent. To my astonishment, this mysterious figure displayed the ability to fire a Kamehameha, only to reveal himself as none other than Grandpa Gohan, posthumously showcasing his mastery of the technique! Remarkably, even after his passing, Grandpa Gohan demonstrated an impressive power blast. In that same arc, I was equally amazed by Goku’s dexterity when he skillfully dodged Grandpa Gohan’s Kamehameha using the “after-image” technique.
10 Yamcha
Despite being overshadowed by stronger characters in the series, Yamcha is still capable of some remarkable feats. During the 22nd World Martial Arts Tournament, he learned a unique technique on his own, making him the second student from the Turtle School to master it. He employed this skill in his battle against Tien, but unfortunately, it didn’t lead to victory.
Yamcha Has a Few Tricks
Remarkably, Yamcha was the one to identify the Kamehameha move when he saw Master Roshi perform it. Although Yamcha doesn’t use it frequently, he has been seen collaborating with other users on adaptations like Team Work Kamehameha and Kamehame Fever. The version of Yamcha from another time period, known as “Future Yamcha,” can also execute the Kamehameha technique.
9 Krillin
Similar to Yamcha, Krillin too grasped the art of Kamehameha while under Master Roshi’s tutelage. He later employed this skill during the 22nd World Martial Arts Tournament, using it against Chiaotzu. Notably, Roshi commented that although Krillin didn’t fully master the technique at first, he managed to execute it in time when needed.
Krillin Mixes Quality With Quantity
Just like numerous users who customize their moves, Krillin occasionally employs diverse postures when executing the Kamehameha. One unique move Krillin has employed is the “Scattering Bullet,” where the energy wave splits into numerous smaller and swifter orbs. Krillin has deployed this attack against the Saibamen and Frieza’s troops.
8 Tien
Tieng Shinhan hails from an alien race called Triclops, but among Earth’s inhabitants, he is one of the most powerful martial artists. Initially, as a disciple of the Crane School, he aims to take revenge on Mercenary Tao by challenging Goku. However, Master Roshi manages to dissuade him from this path, showing him a different perspective.
Tien Escaped the Attack, Only To Use It
At the 22nd World Martial Arts Tournament, Tien had the opportunity to observe the Kamehameha technique directly. Interestingly, Yamcha employed this attack against Tien, who managed to evade it. This encounter allowed Tien to learn and eventually replicate the move, even drawing praise from Master Roshi.
7 Gohan
In my humble opinion as a movie critic, I must say that Gohan, the son of the legendary Goku, demonstrated an astonishing ability to master the Kamehameha technique alongside his old man. As the story unfolded, we saw him wielding this powerful attack with increasing frequency, inching ever closer to his father’s formidable level of combat prowess.
Like Father, Like Son
Gohan and his dad can execute the One-Handed Kamehameha move. In his Super Saiyan 2 and Ultimate transformations, he can additionally unleash the colossal Ultimate Kamehameha attack, producing an enormous energy explosion. Interestingly, there’s a time Gohan performed a Father-Son Kamehameha with the assistance of Goku’s spirit. Remarkably, when Baby possessed him, Baby could also use the Kamehameha technique.
6 Goten
Throughout the series, Goten demonstrates an exceptional talent, becoming the youngest character ever to achieve Super Saiyan status. During his training with Gohan for the 25th World Martial Arts Tournament, he mastered the Kamehameha attack but struggled with controlling it properly. In fact, at first, Goten calls it the “Kamekameha” instead of the correct pronunciation.
A Kamehameha Prodigy
Moreover, it’s clear that Goten is skilled enough to utilize this power in different forms as well. For instance, in the movie “Dragon Ball Z: Broly – Second Coming,” we see Goten performing the “Family Kamehameha” with his father and brother. The Bros. Kamehameha is another technique that both Gohan and Goten can execute together within the Dragon Ball universe.
5 Cell
Dr. Gero designed Cell, a combatant, by combining the genetic makeup of the show’s strongest fighters such as Goku, Vegeta, Piccolo, and even Frieza, the villain. As a result, this super warrior acquired the skill to execute the Kamehameha move.
Even the Cell Juniors Could Perform the Attack, Too
He even planned to use the Solar Kamehameha to take down the solar system. In his Perfect form, Cell was also capable of the Earth-Destroying Kamehameha attack. Gohan even challenged Cell to a Kamehameha duel, which actually got him excited, if only to show off his superiority. The Cell Juniors were also capable of performing the technique, even being able to perform the Father-Son Kamehameha attack with Perfect Cell.
4 Pan
Pan, growing up in a household of formidable combatants, it’s not surprising that she developed some unique skills, given her lineage and rumored inheritance of Gohan’s abilities. Notably, this skill set involves mastering the art of the Kamehameha, a powerful technique.
The Kamehameha Gives & Takes Away
During the battle against Oceanus Shenron, Pan skillfully executed the Kamehameha and even revealed its true form, disguising herself as Princess Oto. Alongside Goku and Trunks, she also contributed to the Galaxy Tri-Attack. Later on, the earthbound Naturon Shenron mimicked this move after absorbing Pan, naming it Kamekameha. Interestingly, in a twist of fate, Goku’s own Kamehameha ultimately led to his defeat.
3 Majin Buu
Initially, playful Majin Buu learns the move after observing Goku doing it, believing his foe was just fooling around. This specific technique is often referred to as Majin Kamehameha. Notably, different forms of Buu have also demonstrated their ability to execute this powerful maneuver since then.
Even Uub Used The Attack
In the Budokai fighting game series, the malevolent character Kid Buu has mastered a powerful attack called Warp Kamehameha, which is a fusion of Planet Burst and Super Kamehameha. Interestingly, Uub, who represents Kid Buu’s reincarnation in human form, demonstrates the ability to perform a Kamehameha wave that disintegrates Majin Buu from Universe 11 into various fragments of himself.
2 Trunks
Although Vegeta has never really used the Kamehameha, his son Trunks might be another story. Trunks notably uses the technique in GT, among other appearances. In these instances, it’s generally believed he picked up the move thanks to his friendship with Goten. Added to this, Trunks and Goten are also able to perform this attack while fused as Gotenks.
Often Performed In Tandem
In some versions like the Dragon Ball Heroes: Victory Mission series and manga adaptations, Gotenks can unleash Burning Kamehameha, a powerful move that combines his Kamehameha with Trunks’ Burning Attack. Additionally, Trunks and Goten can perform Friends Kamehameha together. The RPG game Dragon Ball Z: Buu’s Fury offers Trunks the exclusive Flame Kamehameha move, which is similar to a flamethrower.
1 Goku
Although Master Roshi is known for inventing it, the technique is famously associated with main character Goku and recognized as his signature move. Goku initially learned to execute this move by observing Roshi during their battle against the flames at Fire Mountain. Remarkably, Goku demonstrated mastery over the move on his very first attempt.
The Hero’s Signature Attack
Goku employs various adaptations of the Kamehameha technique, like the Feet Kamehameha that propels him skyward. Some modifications are accessible only through his distinct Super Saiyan transformations, such as God Kamehameha and True Kamehameha. It’s worth noting that when Goku fuses with Vegeta to create Vegito or Gogeta, the Kamehameha attack is utilized, even if the characters he’s combined with haven’t employed it before.
