Horizon’s Questionable Future Addressed by Kevin Costner

Horizon's Questionable Future Addressed by Kevin Costner

As a long-time admirer of Kevin Costner‘s work, I have witnessed his artistic journey unfold over the years, and I must say, I am deeply moved by his unwavering dedication to his latest project, “Horizon: An American Saga.” Despite the initial setbacks, I find myself rooting for this epic Western saga, not just because it’s a grand story that spans generations, but because of Costner’s relentless pursuit of his vision.

Despite falling short of expectations, Kevin Costner remains optimistic about wrapping up his grand Western tale titled Horizon. With an initial budget of $50 million, the first part of the four-chapter series, named Horizon: An American Saga – Chapter 1, only earned $34 million in its brief theatrical run. In a bid to recoup some losses, the film was made available for rental or purchase on PVOD platforms less than three weeks after its release. The second chapter of the series, initially set to debut earlier this month, will now premiere at the 81st Venice International Film Festival on September 7. It’s uncertain whether it will eventually hit cinemas or go directly to streaming platforms instead.

In an extensive chat with TODAY, Kevin Costner, who has been working on the ambitious Western saga “Horizon” for years, shared insights about upcoming chapters 3 and 4. He mentioned that although parts of chapter 3 have already been filmed, he is striving to wrap up the series. This isn’t just to avoid keeping fans in suspense, but because he made a personal commitment to himself that he intends to honor.

“I’ve committed myself to something challenging, and I’m doing everything I can to fulfill that pledge. My aim is to share these epic tales with others, and I hope they grow attached to these characters… I’ve already started filming part of the third installment, and ideally, I’ll shoot them consecutively in the spring.”

Will Horizon Find New Life on Streaming?

After making its debut on Max on August 23, it remains uncertain if Horizon Chapter 1 will secure a second chance – and attract a new fanbase – through streaming platforms. Although it showed promising results as a Premium Video On Demand release, many films that struggled at the box office have surprisingly climbed to the top of the charts. There’s a possibility it could repeat this success, but whether it’s enough to convince Warner Bros. executives to greenlight the remaining movies is yet to be seen. Costner remains optimistic, acknowledging that patience might be required in this case.

Often, the creations you have in mind may not initially connect with others. However, once completed, people start to grasp its essence and often claim it as their own, saying things like, “I adore this film. I admire these characters. I didn’t anticipate where the story was headed.” It’s fulfilling in life when we experience such unexpected surprises.

In anticipation of updates about the release date and location for Horizon: An American Saga – Chapter 2, we can merely hold our breath, hoping that Costner will fulfill all he pledged at the start of this journey. It would be a pity if what might be his final grand achievement were to slip through our fingers.
