In partnership with Mixed Media, he has unveiled five fresh lawn signs that provide a more straightforward take on the ongoing socio-political situation. These signs address various topics, ranging from calling for a truce in the conflict between Israel and Hamas to advocating for reproductive rights within the U.S.
In my perspective, the recent creations serve as an extension to the initial series of protest signs that Martinez and Charlie James Gallery unveiled during the last election cycle. Being all too familiar with the tendency of politicians to promise one thing but act differently, Martinez aimed for a “political expression that’s both subtle and clear-cut, steering away from the harsh and often heartless rhetoric typical in political discourse,” as Martinez expressed in a statement.
18 x 24 inches in size and crafted from double-faced corrugated plastic, these signs draw inspiration from Martinez’s neon signage that embody haiku-like sentiments, providing insightful commentary on the gradual disappearance of indigenous cultures within Los Angeles. Simultaneously, they serve as motivational messages for mankind at large.
Previously, Martinez mentioned to Hypeart that it’s crucial for him to converse with individuals who aren’t interested in visiting museums or don’t show much interest. He explained that the neons he uses are like attempts to connect with passersby, hanging in windows as a means of communication.
