Mariah Carey Says Her Mother and Sister Died on the Same Day: “My Heart Is Broken”

As a long-time fan of Mariah Carey, I can only imagine the depth of sorrow she must be feeling after losing her mother and sister so tragically, on the same day. Having followed her journey through her music and memoir, it’s clear that her relationships with her family, particularly her mother and sister, were complex and deeply impactful.

Mariah Carey shared on Monday she lost her mother and sister on the same day last weekend.

“I’m devastated to share that I lost my mother over the weekend, and tragically, on the same day, my sister also passed away,” the Grammy-winner confided in People. “I consider myself fortunate to have spent a week with my mom before she left us. I’m grateful for all the love, support, and understanding as I navigate through this incredibly difficult period. Please respect my privacy during this tough time.”

Carey refrained from disclosing the reasons of death or their respective ages for the women; The Hollywood Reporter sought additional clarification on the matter.

In a memoir published in 2020, as mentioned by People magazine, Mariah Carey described her relationship with her mother, Patricia, as an intricate rope made up of feelings such as pride, pain, shame, gratitude, jealousy, admiration, and disappointment. She further stated that a complex love binds her heart to her mother’s.

In spite of the challenges, the singer chose to dedicate her memoir to her mother. Within the book’s pages, she also confessed that her bond with her sister Alison was strained and, during that period, it seemed “safer emotionally and physically” for her not to engage in any interaction with Alison or her brother Morgan.

In their family, Alison, Mariah, and Morgan were Patricia and Alfred Carey’s three precious children. Unfortunately, their parents divorced when Mariah was just three, leaving her father with little involvement in her upbringing. Regrettably, he passed away approximately two decades ago.
