The Crow Director Shares Sequel Plans That Will Likely Never Happen

As a cinephile with over three decades of film-watching under my belt, I must say that Rupert Sanders’ latest offering, The Crow, has left me feeling rather crow-faced. The movie’s box office performance has been as dismal as a raven in the Sahara, and the critical reception has been about as warm as a winter’s day in the Arctic tundra.

Film director Rupert Sanders is mulling over a sequel for this year’s comic book movie adaptation, “The Crow”. However, it remains uncertain if these plans will materialize. In an interview with Variety, Sanders shared some ambitious concepts he has for “The Crow 2” and potential follow-ups, expressing his desire to eventually implement some of the creative ideas that didn’t make it into the initial film.

“This tale presents a challenging twist due to its deeply moving narrative involving two characters. There were numerous concepts and details I had brainstormed that seemed intriguing, but I felt they needed more development before being included in the script. In regards to his character arc, I find it captivating to envision him traversing between dimensions like Nightcrawler, manipulating people’s movements, and exploring the consequences of one realm gaining dominance over another.”

Sanders admitted that discussions about additional films for “The Crow” have taken place. However, given the performance at the box office and the critical reception of his initial attempt, it’s uncertain if these talks will persist.

“After wrapping up my latest film project, my mind is currently in a state of creative exhaustion. However, I’ve found that a brief respite often sparks new ideas. So, while I’m not actively brainstorming just yet, I can feel the familiar itch starting to surface – perhaps this story isn’t fully told. If given the opportunity to collaborate again on future installments, I am confident we could create something truly remarkable for the next chapter.”

The Crow Has Seriously Struggled To Take Flight at the Box Office

Just as a hardened or skeptical film enthusiast might say: the success of a movie, such as The Crow, hinges on its box office performance. Sadly, this film has found it difficult to soar financially. Initially predicted to earn between $6-9 million, it only garnered around $4.6 million during its opening weekend. This underwhelming start seems to indicate that the sequel ideas proposed by Sanders may never come to fruition.

Critics haven’t given the film much praise, with our own Julian Roman from MovieWeb stating that the remake is significantly inferior to the original classic film.

“Despite some praise, this adaptation falls short compared to James O’Barr’s original comics. Fans who remember Brandon Lee and Alex Proyas’ 1994 version fondly may find themselves disappointed. Compared to other poor interpretations, it doesn’t even come close. This reviewer prefers not to engage in a comparison with the three previous disappointing versions.”

Under the direction of Rupert Sanders, with screenplay contributions from Zach Baylin and Will Schneider, the film titled The Crow features Bill Skarsgård as Eric Draven, also known as The Crow, alongside FKA Twigs as Shelly Webster. Additionally, Isabella Wei portrays Zadie, while Danny Huston, Laura Birn, Sami Bouajila, and Jordan Bolger round out the cast. This movie is a modern adaptation of the 1989 comic book by James O’Barr. The official summary for this reinterpretation can be found below:

“Eric Draven (Skarsgård) and Shelly Webster (FKA twigs), two souls destined for each other, tragically meet their end as the shadows of her haunted past return. If granted the opportunity to rescue his one true love, Eric embarks on a relentless quest for vengeance against their murderers. Guided by fate, he navigates through both the realm of the living and the spirit world, aiming to right the injustices done.”
