As a seasoned gamer with years of experience under my belt and glasses perched precariously on my nose, I find myself torn between the cinematic beauty of Star Wars Outlaws and the practicality of a full screen view. Having spent countless hours hunched over various screens, my eyesight is not what it used to be, and as much as I’d love to immerse myself in the expansive 21:9 landscape, I find it a tad too taxing on the old peepers.
For some viewers, the cinematic feel of Star Wars Outlaws may be enhanced by its design, but including black bars at the top and bottom of the screen might not suit all users’ preferences.
If you’d rather turn off the automatically activated black bars, the process is simple – adjust a single setting within the options menu.
How to remove black bars from Star Wars Outlaws
Navigate to the pause menu, then choose Settings from the options provided. After that, tap on the Display and Graphics section.
In this area, you’ll notice a setting labeled ‘Cinematic Display Mode’. Change this so that it fills your screen instead of being 21:9. This adjustment will eliminate the black bars at the top and bottom, resulting in the game stretching across your entire display just like most games typically do.
Should you change the aspect ratio in Star Wars Outlaws?
It’s ultimately down to personal preference as to whether you should play in 21:9 or fullscreen aspect ratios.
The main thing to consider is that playing in widescreen lets you see more to the left and right of your character, and is generally considered to be a more cinematic way to play the game. Especially when all of the HUD elements fade away, it definitely comes closest to immersing you in the Star Wars world.
Conversely, this option offers a compact display on your screen, but it may cause difficulties in viewing elements like HUD when you have a smaller monitor or tend to sit far from your TV. Since I have visual impairment, I immediately changed my game’s setting from 21:9 to fullscreen as soon as I started playing.
Instead, it’s worth mentioning that while fullscreen mode can offer an immersive experience, there are some drawbacks to consider. For instance, when you switch to this display setting, you might find that the camera appears significantly closer to Kay. This is because the game effectively removes the left and right edges of the screen and zooms into the central area.
A great approach to handling this issue is by expanding the scope of what you can see in the game at any given moment. To accomplish this, navigate to the Settings menu, specifically the Gameplay section. Once there, locate the ‘Field of View (FOV)‘ slider and gently increase it. I discovered that a setting between 85 and 90 offers a suitable view for me, but you should adjust it to your comfort level.
Enlarging your Field of View (FOV) too significantly could make the game appear somewhat distorted or fish-eye like, which isn’t great for gameplay and might cause motion sickness. Additionally, your performance might dip slightly because the game has to render more of the game world simultaneously. Finding the optimal balance is important, so play around with these settings to discover the perfect combination that suits you best.
Since most people who play with a 21:9 aspect ratio are typically PC gamers due to the necessary hardware support, it’s wonderful that Ubisoft offers console users a glimpse into the experience of gaming on a wide screen. However, this format may not appeal to everyone!
