Netflix Nabs Angelina Jolie’s ‘Maria’ Ahead of Venice Bow

As a long-time admirer of both Angelina Jolie and Maria Callas, I am absolutely thrilled that Netflix has picked up Pablo Larraín’s “Maria”. Having followed Jolie’s illustrious career and been captivated by Callas’s enchanting voice since my teenage years, the prospect of seeing these two extraordinary talents come together in a biopic is nothing short of exhilarating.

Netflix has acquired the rights to Pablo Larraín’s movie titled “Maria“, where Angelina Jolie portrays the renowned opera singer Maria Callas. This move takes place prior to its global debut at the Venice Film Festival on August 29th.

Following its debut on the Lido, it will stream on Netflix at an undisclosed date.

On Wednesday, Larraín expressed in a statement: “I’m thrilled to collaborate once more with the Netflix team who are so devoted to cinema. This film represents my most personal work thus far. It is an artistic interpretation and psychological portrayal of Maria Callas. Having spent her life entertaining audiences worldwide, she ultimately decides to find her own voice, her own identity, and sing for herself. I feel incredibly privileged to narrate this story and make it accessible to viewers globally, much like Maria did with her life.”

Drawing from real-life events, the movie “Maria” is set to narrate the tumultuous, breathtakingly beautiful, and heart-wrenchingly tragic tale of one of the world’s most renowned opera singers, as she revisits and reinterprets her life during her last days in 1970s Paris.

Additionally, the cast features Pierfrancesco Favino (known for “Adagio” and “The Hummingbird”), Alba Rohrwacher (“La Chimera” and “Hungry Hearts”), Haluk Bilginer (“Winter Sleep”), Kodi Smit-McPhee (“The Power of the Dog” and “Elvis”), and Valeria Golino (“Portrait of a Lady on Fire” and “Caos Calmo”).

As a devoted admirer, let me share that the compelling script I’m excited about was masterfully penned by none other than Steven Knight, a genius behind productions like “Spencer,” “Peaky Blinders,” and “Eastern Promises.” The production powerhouses include Juan de Dios Larraín for Fabula, Jonas Dornbach for Komplizen Film, and Lorenzo Mieli for The Apartment, a Fremantle Company. For global distribution of this anticipated project titled “Maria,” we’ve got FilmNation Entertainment on board.
