‘KAWS:HOLIDAY’ Shanghai Embraces the North Bund Moon

'KAWS:HOLIDAY' Shanghai Embraces the North Bund Moon

As a long-time fan of KAWS and his innovative artworks, I couldn’t help but feel a surge of excitement upon learning about the latest addition to the KAWS:HOLIDAY tour. Having followed the journey of COMPANION since its inception, it’s truly remarkable to see how far this iconic character has come – from humble beginnings to towering installations gracing the skylines of cities around the world.

On August 29th Update: Last night, the highly anticipated exhibition KAWS:HOLIDAY Shanghai was unveiled at the prestigious North Bund dock near the Huangpu River. The event showcased a fresh design – an oversized inflatable artwork depicting COMPANION lounging with the moon in hand, admiring the sky. This is the first light sculpture within the KAWS:HOLIDAY series.

Update (August 16): It has been announced that Shanghai’s North Bund district will be the next destination on the KAWS:HOLIDAY world tour. The artist, based in Brooklyn, has hinted at a large-scale installation via Instagram this week, stating that it was created in partnership with organizer JFJ Productions as a tribute to the Moon Festival’s custom of exhibiting lanterns for prosperity.

Alongside the exhibition running from August 29 to September 1, 2024, t30pm CST, and it comes in shades of brown, grey, and black. This vinyl figure stands approximately 9.5 inches tall and carries a glowing orbital moon on its chest, which is designed to light up in the dark.

Just like other KAWS releases, the figure includes an authenticated NFC chip for verification and you’ll find a variety of hoodies and mugs available for purchase both online at the DDTStore and at the temporary shop situated inside the Shanghai Kerry Centre.

As a gaming enthusiast, I’m thrilled to share that I’ll be part of KAWS’s global tour, KAWS:HOLIDAY, making its 11th stop. This epic journey is a joint creation with the Hong Kong creative studio, AllRightsReserved. Recently, I’ve been dropping hints on Instagram about one of my enormous COMPANION figures, showing it reclining under the night sky with a glowing moon cradled in its lap. It’s going to be an unforgettable adventure!

Among his numerous collaborative works, some notable ones being illustrations for cereal boxes and partnerships with General Mills and Fortnite skins, KAWS’ alliance with AllRightsReserved has been the most significant. This is due to their continuous series of sculptural launches and the large-scale installations they exhibit worldwide under the name HOLIDAY.

In 2018, the initial KAWS:HOLIDAY exhibit debuted at Seokchon Lake, Seoul, and has since traveled to various locations including Hong Kong, Mt. Fuji, Taipei, Changbai Mountain (China), Singapore, Melbourne, London, and even a virtual space where the crossbones character was sent into orbit. Each stop features unique adaptations, and on August 15 at 11pm ET, the 11th destination of this tour will be officially revealed.
