Signed Dalí Prints Take to Auction After Rediscovery in a London Garage

As a seasoned art collector with a knack for uncovering hidden gems, I can’t help but feel a thrill of excitement upon hearing about this discovery! A London garage, of all places, hiding Salvador Dalí and Théo Tobiasse masterpieces for half a century – it’s like stumbling upon a treasure trove in my own backyard!

In a London garage, hidden for half a century, a collection of ten lithographs by Salvador Dalí have been found and will be up for auction on September 30. Also included are five lithographs by Théo Tobiasse, a renowned French artist. Experts predict these pieces could fetch several thousand dollars at the Hansons Richmond auction. Essentially, time may forget some things, but not the art market!

Chris Kirkham discovered these pieces after receiving an invitation to the property in Berkeley Square, a neighborhood recognized for its historic allure. The consignor bought these lithographs for about 500 EUR (approximately 2,400 or 3,100 EUR in today’s value) from a London gallery prior to its closure in the late ’70s. Today, this collection is expected to earn ten times its initial investment. Each Dalí artwork is estimated to be worth between 300 and 500 EUR (around $394 to $656 USD), while a Tobiasse lithograph could fetch between 100 and 300 EUR ($131 to $394 USD).

The lithographs were found to be early versions of the Spanish artist’s 1978 series titled ‘L’Art d’Aimer d’Ovide (Ovid’s Art of Loving’. In these dreamlike depictions, they portray subjects in settings drawn from Ovid’s poetry and natural landscapes.

Kirkham mentions that he initially bought the prints with the intention of hanging them in his home located in Berkeley Square, but due to not having time for it, they were kept in his garage instead. Now, as he plans to retire and move overseas, the lithographs will be auctioned off for the first time.
