As a die-hard movie buff with decades of cinematic adventures under my belt, I can confidently say that the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) has been a rollercoaster ride of epic proportions. With Spider-Man: No Way Home bringing Charlie Cox’s Daredevil into the fold and Jon Favreau reprising his role as Happy Hogan, it was a delightful blend of nostalgia and innovation that only the MCU can deliver.
In the concluding chapter of Tom Holland’s Spider-Man saga, titled Spider-Man: No Way Home, we witness the entry of Charlie Cox as Daredevil into the Marvel Cinematic Universe. However, an earlier draft of the script almost included a dated reference to the initial Daredevil film that was thankfully discarded. Apart from Holland and Cox, this movie also brought Jon Favreau back to his recurring role in the MCU as Happy Hogan. Favreau has been a cornerstone of the Marvel Universe since its inception, contributing not only as an actor but also as a director. Interestingly, before he became Tony Stark’s reliable chauffeur/security head/confidant, Favreau portrayed Daredevil’s best friend, Foggy Nelson, in the widely criticized Daredevil (2003).
Actor Charlie Cox recently attended Tampa Bay Comic Con, where he spoke about the upcoming Disney+ series “Daredevil: Born Again.” At the panel, Cox talked about Matt Murdock’s debut in the MCU and how his initial scene in “Spider-Man: No Way Home” almost echoed the old Daredevil film. The original scene included a pun involving Foggy Nelson, which was played by Jon Favreau in an earlier version of Daredevil. Fortunately, that joke was removed from the final script, much like how many fans have erased the original Daredevil movie from their minds. Cox commented:
“During Spider-Man, I had a scene alongside Jon Favreau, whom I admire. He’s also known for his role as Foggy in Daredevil. We attempted to include a witty reference, a sort of hidden joke or Easter egg, where my character asks a question and Favreau’s character Happy responds with, ‘I’m a bit hazy about that at the moment.’ I can’t recall if it made it into the final cut, but we tried to incorporate it while filming, hoping viewers would catch on.”
Tom Holland Is Returning as Spider-Man in the MCU
On the big screen, the story of Spider-Man continues to unfold, with Tom Holland confirming that a fourth film, “Spider-Man 4”, is under development. Should this movie come to fruition, it will place Holland’s version of Spider-Man as the second MCU hero to star in four standalone films, following Chris Hemsworth’s Thor (though Captain America’s franchise is preparing for its fourth installment with a new leading man). Notably, if produced, this film would make Holland the sole actor to portray Spider-Man in four standalone movies. Previously, Tobey Maguire played Peter Parker in Sam Raimi’s trilogy, while Andrew Garfield starred in only two films of the “Amazing Spider-Man” series.
Apart from Spider-Man 4, there are more projects in the pipeline starring everyone’s favorite web-slinger. One such project is the long-anticipated finale to the Spider-Verse trilogy, titled Beyond the Spider-Verse. Originally slated for release this year, just under a year after the second installment, Across the Spider-Verse, its premiere has been delayed with no new release date announced yet. In addition, a live-action series based on the Spider-Verse movies is being developed, where Nicolas Cage will return to play the role of Spider-Noir. Based on 1940s crime noir films, Noir features Cage as Peter Parker from 1930s New York, battling against villains inspired by the era’s design trends.
