Drew Barrymore on Why She Regrets “Chaste” ‘Playboy’ Photos: “Never Knew There Would Be an Internet”

As a fan who has grown up alongside Drew Barrymore, her latest Instagram post felt like reading a heartfelt letter from an old friend. Her honesty about her journey through Hollywood and her experiences as a child star resonates deeply with me, as I too have watched her navigate the industry’s challenges over the years.

30 years after posing for the cover of Playboy, Drew Barrymore reflects back through a new perspective as a mother of two girls.

On Friday, the actress shared a heartfelt Instagram post titled “PHONE HOME”, reminiscent of her 1982 movie E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial, expressing her desire to reveal aspects of herself as a parent in an open and honest manner. This revelation was made in a rather exposing and emotionally raw fashion.

Barrymore shared stories about her unique upbringing in Hollywood, growing up in an atypical manner that involved being exposed to mature surroundings and working as a child actress. Additionally, she reminisced about posing for the Playboy magazine’s January 1995 issue, just before turning 20 years old.

“She stated that she had been exposed to numerous indulgent situations at parties and within her own home, where the content was extremely private and deeply embarrassing for her. She believes children should not be exposed to such material. Moreover, due to these surroundings, she admits to being quite open and exhibitionistic in her youth. Although she considered it as an art form, she never passed judgment on it.”

Barrymore added, “Yet when I posed for a tasteful artistic feature in Playboy during my twenties, I assumed the magazine wouldn’t resurface since it was on paper. I wasn’t aware of the internet’s existence. I didn’t know many things back then.”

Currently, the host of the Drew Barrymore Show, who is a parent, is resolute about shielding her children, similar to how she wished to be safeguarded herself. She admits that she never imagined her kids would find themselves in a situation with too much technology and social media access, which is one reason why she hasn’t given her daughters, Olive (12) and Frankie (10), smartphones just yet.

At the age of 14, she gained independence and shifted into her initial living space. This experience made her feel as though she was beginning a new chapter in her life according to her own choices.

In a continuous reflection, I realized that I had no one to look after me, Barrymore said. “My own mother was heavily criticized for letting me get carried away,” he continued. “Now, as a mother myself, I have immense compassion for her because I understand we’re all imperfect.”

Through the kindness she’s encountered throughout her life, having had the fortunate opportunity to interact with people since her early years, she now feels compelled to “return that kindness in kind,” as it were. The esteemed actress from Charlie’s Angels seeks to fulfill this desire by working to safeguard our children from finding themselves in situations where they lack control over the discourse within complex social dynamics, which may be recorded and could potentially harm them in the future.

At the age of 13, Barrymore shared an embarrassing incident in front of many people, leaving them stunned. This event was a significant part of her difficult childhood. The media portrayed her as a failed prodigy, with headlines appearing on newspapers like the National Enquirer and numerous other magazines. She felt that this would be her lasting story, and she yearned to vanish from existence and never reveal herself again.

Instead, the star of “50 First Dates” explained she “took one step at a time and got my life back on course, with blunders following along, but that’s just how life goes. We stumble. People have been incredibly gracious, forgiving me, and encouraging as I matured.”

“Barrymore also believes that encouraging others is part of her destiny and life’s mission. ‘We all stumble and recover, again and again,’ she said, describing life as a thrilling yet unpredictable roller coaster ride. However, our time on earth is limited, so we should make the most of it and support one another during this journey.”
