The Librarians Spinoff Surviving the CW Cancelation Could Be a Bad Thing

The Librarians Spinoff Surviving the CW Cancelation Could Be a Bad Thing

As a devoted fan of The Librarians, I have eagerly followed the adventures of the original team for years. I’ve laughed, cried, and even learned a thing or two about history along the way. So when I heard about The Librarians: The Next Chapter, my curiosity was piqued. However, after reading the latest updates, I must say I’m left with a sense of disappointment that borders on disbelief.

As a dedicated fan, I’ve been eagerly waiting for the return of “The Librarians” since its cancellation in 2018. But when I heard about “The Librarians: The Next Chapter,” set to debut in January 2025, I must admit, I’m not exactly jumping with excitement. Initially planned for the CW to cater to a younger audience, it seems that “The Next Chapter” has been dropped from the CW’s 2024-2025 production slate and is now back in the hands of TNT (as reported by Deadline). This unexpected move gives me pause, as it suggests some potential issues with the new team of magical adventurers.

The cancellation of “The Librarians” by the CW to accommodate ranching reality TV show “The Wranglers” seems increasingly questionable as more details emerge. While “The Librarians: The Next Chapter” may return to its original network, the main reason it shouldn’t have been axed along with the sudden cancellation is the conspicuous absence of the original cast members. The enchanting magic they brought to the beloved fantasy series was a key factor in its appeal.

The Librarians Began in the TV Movie Space

Initiated by Dean Devlin from ‘Leverage’, ‘The Librarians’ started out as a series of TV films in 2004, featuring Noah Wyle as Flynn Carsen, a special librarian committed to safeguarding the world’s most significant artifacts. After three well-received TV movies, Wyle reprised his role for ‘The Librarians’ television series that ran from 2014 to 2018, spanning across four seasons and 42 episodes. Along with Wyle at the helm, renowned comedian Bob Newhart joined the cast alongside Jane Curtin, John Laroquette, Rebecca Romijn, Christian Kane, Lindy Booth, John Harlan Kim, and an array of exceptional guest stars.

Due to the undeniable camaraderie displayed by the actors on-screen, the enchanting escapades of The Librarians managed to win over viewers on TNT. The series is structured around episodic journeys, and its story revolves around a hidden group of scholars and historians who safeguard the world’s most precious books, ancient texts, and mystical artifacts. Although the show has a whimsical style, it thrives on its well-balanced ensemble cast and the electrifying chemistry they share, with former NATO agent and future leader Colonel Eve Baird (Romijn) serving as the guiding force behind their on-screen interactions.

In addition to Baird, the series provides ample opportunities for the other actors to display their compelling camaraderie, featuring talented characters such as skilled hacker and thief Ezekiel (Harlan Kim), mathematician with magical abilities Cassandra (Booth), linguist and architect Jacob (Kane), the enigmatic owner of the Library Annex Sir Galahad (Laroquette), and Carsen who connects the series through his intriguing invitations and instructions. The engaging dynamic among the main cast is the primary draw for watching The Librarians. However, with none of them holding a leading role in The Next Chapter, there seems to be little motivation to invest time or emotion, let alone tune in. Only Christian Kane has been confirmed to make a guest appearance on the show, which may not be enough incentive for viewers to watch it.

What is The Librarians: The Next Chapter About?

If The CW deemed that “The Wranglers” was a more effective choice to draw viewers, it suggests that there may be significant issues with “The Librarians: The Next Chapter”. Despite the fact that specific behind-the-scenes details regarding The CW’s decision to abandon “The Next Chapter” before TNT took it over were not disclosed, the casting seems to be the most obvious problem. With Wyle not appearing as Carsen, there is minimal justification for “The Next Chapter” to persist, let alone convincing viewers.

If Carsen isn’t part of the series, the spinoff would undeniably lack the essence it once had, potentially feeling like a pale imitation at best and an unwarranted affront at worst. Even as Carsen’s character took a back seat in The Librarians, the unique chemistry between Romijn, Kane, Laroquette, Booth, and Kim was hard to replicate for the new, inexperienced cast members taking over their roles. The magic that made The Librarians so special would be tough to recreate in the spinoff, especially given the recent loss of legendary actor Bob Newhart, who played the first librarian and served as a guiding force for the others.

According to the official logline from Electric Entertainment:

“The latest show revolves around a ‘Librarian’ from an earlier era who unexpectedly landed in our present time and can’t seem to leave. When he ventures back to his old castle, now transformed into a museum, his actions unwittingly unleash magic across the land. He is then assigned a new group of assistants to rectify the chaos, resulting in the formation of a fresh team of Librarians.”

Per the release:

The upcoming series features main actors Callum McGowan from Jamestown, Jessica Green from The Outpost, Olivia Morris of Hotel Portofino, and Bluey Robinson known for Britannia. Additionally, Caroline Loncq, who starred in Mammals, will make a guest appearance. Lastly, Christian Kane returns to play “Jacob Stone” in a guest role.

Given that the original cast members are absent, the storyline feels repetitive, and the CW opting for a reality show instead of continuing the spinoff, it seems reasonable to assume The Librarians: The Next Chapter might not be worth watching. Currently, The Librians can be found on the CW.
