VCs come and go, but launchpads will remain a fundamental part of web3 | Opinion

As a seasoned crypto investor with battle-scars from the rollercoaster ride that is this industry, I can confidently say that the landscape for fundraising in crypto and web3 projects has been a thrilling yet tumultuous journey. Having witnessed the rise and fall of Bitcoin prices, I’ve learned to navigate through market volatility like a seasoned sailor navigating stormy seas.

When starting a business, a great idea is worthless if no one is available or willing to invest the funds to make it bloom. In the hi-tech world, where creativity and competition mold our future via non-stop innovation, venture capital and private equity firms are the oxygen this fast-paced industry runs on.

While a good idea may get you in the door, securing essential funding requires demonstrating capable leadership, a reasonable product-market fit, and a concise business strategy. That being said, fundraising in “traditional” tech is fairly structured and predictable with a higher tolerance for the patient, long-term approach.

In contrast, cryptocurrency and web3 initiatives approach fundraising uniquely compared to traditional methods. Instead of seeking investment from conventional Silicon Valley venture capitalists like Andreessen Horowitz and Sequoia Capital in exchange for equity or shares, many of these projects have the option to attract funding specifically targeted towards promising crypto and blockchain ventures from these same VC firms. In fact, some of these top VC firms even have specialized funds dedicated to investing in such projects.

It’s worth noting that the level of venture capital (VC) investment in the crypto sector often mirrors the fluctuations in Bitcoin (BTC) and the broader cryptocurrency market. As an illustration, venture capital funding for crypto reached a historic peak of almost $12 billion in Q1 2022, coinciding with Bitcoin’s previous high price of $69,000 in November 2021. Interestingly, VC funds raised in 2023 fell short of the first quarter of 2022, reflecting a downturn in the market that prompted investors to be cautious.

Crypto’s bear market, defined by exchange collapses, hacks, and scams, coincided with the meteoric rise of AI. This further diverted VC attention away from web3 developments, even as the industry matured and started attracting more attention from traditional institutions.

1. In contrast to their centralized, strict operations and hesitation during unstable market conditions, the blockchain sector has generally welcomed technology VC investment. This is partly because of the volatile nature of cryptocurrencies, uneven venture capital involvement, lessons from the questionable ICO phase in 2017, and the intensely competitive landscape. As a result, Initial Decentralized Offering (IDO) platforms have arisen as an alternative financing method for early-stage initiatives within the industry.

During the past bull market, launchpads gained popularity due to their role as a decentralized platform where crypto communities could easily access numerous projects, choosing which ones deserved investment based on their own judgment. Fueled by retail investors and expanding crypto communities, platforms like DAO Maker and Polkastarter offered valuable resources to projects, aligning with the industry’s principles while providing tools for both projects and investors—including institutional players.

In response to turbulent market conditions that led to plummeting token values and project closures, cryptocurrency-related industries have adapted by developing Initial DEX Offering (IDO) platforms. Platforms like ChainGPT and Seedify, which support multiple blockchains, are increasingly becoming the norm, providing a wider range of projects with an opportunity to participate.

Due to unexpected regulations causing challenges within the industry, numerous launch platforms have made significant efforts to adhere to regional laws by implementing investor protection measures. These platforms not only offer a platform for projects to sell tokens but are increasingly involved in hands-on support for the projects they host, similar to incubators and accelerators found in mainstream technology.

Example: Gems, a freshly launched platform, links up innovative projects with an elite circle of influential investors for assistance post-launch to speed up growth. This space is home to around 4,000 “Investment Leaders,” who enjoy exclusive entry to carefully selected projects and have the chance to invest in promising young companies as well. By thoughtfully managing the interests of both investors and projects, Gems has successfully secured a total of $198 million for its initial three project launches.

The pace of advancements in cryptocurrency is accelerating, transforming the sector right before us. As this field grows, expands its user base, and becomes more integrated with conventional finance, it’s expected that funding options will keep adapting. However, IDO launchpads will continue to be essential building blocks, implementing creative strategies to assist the industry, nurture communities, and promote growth.
