James Gunn Teases Martian Manhunter with DC Easter Egg

As a long-time comic book enthusiast who has grown up reading Martian Manhunter comics, I couldn’t help but feel my heart race when I saw James Gunn sharing that picture of Chocos cookies on social media. The DC Universe has always been rich and vibrant, but the inclusion of Martian Manhunter would take it to a whole new level for me.

In his recent social media update, James Gunn subtly suggests that a well-known Justice League character could be making an appearance in the DC Universe. As co-president of DC Studios, Gunn is eager to kickstart a fresh chapter of interwoven narratives spanning both films and television. The upcoming ‘Creature Commandos’ is due for release this year, while ‘Superman’ has wrapped up filming and is slated for a summer 2023 theater debut. Gunn has been actively sharing glimpses into these projects, and his latest post could be pointing towards the introduction of a major DC hero.

As a die-hard movie fan, I hopped onto my old Twitter account recently to find Guillermo del Toro had posted a picture of a cookie box labeled “Chocos.” Now, these aren’t your regular store-bought cookies; they’re the fictional chocolate sandwich cookies found in the DC Universe, strikingly similar to Oreos. You see, Martian Manhunter, one of DC’s iconic heroes, has a soft spot for these Chocos – you could say he’s addicted!

Instead of the Marvel Cinematic Universe being grounded in our reality, the DC Universe is an alternate universe with aspects that resemble ours but with a distinctly different history. This universe features imaginary cities such as Metropolis and Gotham City, along with fictional businesses like Big Belly Burger or Chocos cookies. Details like Chocos add authenticity to the universe, and could also pave the way for future films. For example, in Man of Steel, there were hints about LexCorp and Wayne Industries that were later developed in Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice. Similarly, the Blaze Comics logo in Metropolis has links to Booster Gold, which was just a delightful prop during filming.

In a possible twist for the DC Universe expansion, the Chocos could serve as an exciting Easter Egg, potentially foreshadowing the arrival of Martian Manhunter. James Gunn’s vision for the DC Universe seems to revolve around a populated superhero landscape, reminiscent of teams such as the Creature Commandos or even the presence of characters like Mr. Terrific, Hawkgirl, Guy Gardner’s Green Lantern, Metamorpho, and The Engineer in Superman. It is plausible that Martian Manhunter might be subtly introduced in Superman, or even in the ongoing filming of Peacemaker’s new season. Characters like Guy Gardner’s Green Lantern, Metamorpho, Booster Gold (who Gunn confirmed will have a television series), and potentially Martian Manhunter were part of the Justice League International, suggesting that Gunn may be laying groundwork for this team in the DCU.

In the past, Martian Manhunter has been subtly hinted at in DC films, such as Zack Snyder’s Justice League, where the character of Calvin Swanwick, portrayed by Henry Lennox, was suggested to be a disguise for Martian Manhunter. Despite his significant presence on television, including roles in the DC Animated Universe and shows like Smallville and Supergirl, Martian Manhunter has yet to receive a major cinematic role, unlike other Justice League members. However, director James Gunn might be setting up Martian Manhunter’s role as a founding member of the Justice League in the DCU with a hint as subtle as a cookie tease.
