As a die-hard fan of the big, green lizard himself, I can tell you that my heart skipped a beat (or perhaps more accurately, a kaiju-sized stomp) when I stumbled upon Godzilla Attack on Tokyo during my recent trip to Japan. Growin’ up in the States, watchin’ Godzilla movies was about as American as apple pie and baseball for me. So, you can imagine my excitement when I found myself standin’ on a bustlin’ street in Tokyo, surrounded by skyscrapers, and suddenly, there he was – the King of the Monsters himself, roarin’ and stompin’ like only he can!
For as long as I can remember, visiting Tokyo has been a cherished dream of mine. Not so long ago, I made that dream come true when I went there to celebrate my 41st birthday.
For about 85% of my 41-year life span, I’ve been a passionate fan of Godzilla. I’ve watched all the top-tier Godzilla films, and guess what? I even managed to pass on my love for the “King of the Monsters” to my 7-year-old son when we went together to see Godzilla Minus One at the cinema.
Man, I was totally floored when my buddy clued me in about this show called “Godzilla’s Rampage in Tokyo” being projected onto the Tokyo Metropolitan Government Building! I couldn’t believe my luck, and I just had to share my thoughts on it. It was an unforgettable experience!
Never In My Wildest Dreams Did I Ever Think I Would See A Life-Sized Godzilla Right Before My Eyes
Among all Godzilla films, “Godzilla Minus One” stands out as my absolute favorite, and it’s a delight to witness this colossal creature in the grandeur of the cinema thanks to the MonsterVerse series.
Apart from the 1998 film “Godzilla,” my encounters with Godzilla have primarily been on smaller screens, which worked alright, but given his grandeur, it’s fitting that Godzilla should be displayed on the largest screen possible instead.
To be quite honest, it never crossed my mind that I’d witness Godzilla displayed on a building’s facade!
To fully appreciate him in all his grandeur, I needed to tip my head back. Reminds me of the movie Cloverfield, where you experience the action as a character down on the ground level. Watching Godzilla’s attack on Tokyo was just like that!
He stood before me, stomping and roaring, and all I could do was stare up at him and watch the destruction. It was so cool!
It Was A Truly Epic Experience, And One That I Will Remember For The Rest Of My Life
I can’t overstate how extraordinary it was to witness a kaiju tale unfold in such an unusual way. Despite its brevity (under 10 minutes long), simply being present alongside fellow Godzilla enthusiasts made the brief duration feel justified.
It turned out to be quite advantageous that it drizzled slightly, given that the event took place outdoors and we had to contend with the weather conditions. When the alarm went off, signaling Godzilla’s approach, it made the spectacle even more thrilling since it was happening amidst the rain.
It kind of reminded me of that scene in King of the Monsters, toward the end, when Godzilla had his final confrontation with King Ghidorah out in the storm, as there were occasional flashes of lightning in the far-off distance during the show.
Back in the day, I stepped into the world of Captain EO at Disney World. The chairs moved here and there, and occasionally, I’d feel a misty shower on my face. Neat, but it felt more like a lab experiment than reality. But this time was different; it was as if the gods themselves had shattered the firmament after Gojira’s rampage. It was an unforgettable night, one that I’ll remember forever.
Hearing The Godzilla Theme Blasting While Staring Up At Godzilla Gave Me Goosebumps
As for something else worth mentioning, it’s the sound quality, which was simply outstanding! If I hadn’t known about the upcoming Godzilla mini-movie while strolling around, I might just as well have soiled myself in surprise – it would have been that intense!
The show opened up stating that this was the monster’s 70th anniversary, which filled my heart with pride since even though I haven’t been alive for that long, I’ve still watched every single Godzilla film from every single era.
Next, we encountered the Godzilla melody, sending shivers down my spine. This was swiftly succeeded by a siren’s wail and a panicked voice in Japanese, warning of an imminent danger drawing near.
He roared, and you could hear his stomping as he entered the scene. All throughout, the sound was incredible, and it really added to the overall experience of the show.
While It Was Short, I’m Still Impressed It Told A Story
The short-lived Godzilla’s Assault on Tokyo left me satisfied. This was due to the fact that they successfully condensed a full narrative within the restricted time frame. He emerges, and humans retaliate using an advanced spacecraft, if I recall correctly.
In a fit of anger, he unleashes his nuclear-like breath, attacking the target. However, the ship managed to withstand the attack and retaliated, which seemed to infuriate Godzilla further. (or)
Throughout the entire occasion, I’ve found myself emphasizing the remarkable technology used, as a 2D image on a building’s façade seemingly moved in a 3D manner, creating an illusion of a ship orbiting Godzilla. In response, Godzilla would stretch out his arms and seize the ship, ultimately demolishing it with a destructive grip.
Firstly, it’s evident that the military is in the process of rejuvenation, and later on, they engineer one of Godzilla’s most formidable adversaries – Mechagodzilla. To be frank, if there’s anything I found disappointing about the show was the absence of a confrontation between Godzilla and my preferred antagonist. Frankly speaking, it was quite a letdown.
Overall, I Really Want To See A Whole Godzilla Film Projected On The Front Of A Building
As a die-hard fan of Godzilla, I can’t help but yearn for an immersive experience. Watching Godzilla Attack on Tokyo was merely a teaser; it sparked a desire within me to witness an entire movie unfold on a colossal scale – preferably the exhilarating action sequences. If only I could catch glimpses of epic movies like Destroy All Monsters or the original 1954 film, up high on the grandest screen one could ever envision. It’s just a dream for now, but a dream that fuels my passion for this legendary monster.
Reflecting on the hypothetical scenario of a fictional attack on Tokyo, it sparked my imagination about such an event’s potential and, while I understand that it is extremely unlikely to occur in reality, I find myself yearning for Toho Studios to delve deeper into exploring different narrative directions. Perhaps they could expand their creative horizons by incorporating more expansive storylines like this one.
The trip to Japan wasn’t cheap, and I don’t know when I’ll go again (or even if I’ll go again), but if I heard that Toho was making a longer, possibly 30 minute show of Godzilla on the front of a building, then I think I would scrounge around in my couch cushions and dig into my savings account to take another trip to the land of the rising sun. I’m dead serious. You have no idea how much I love Godzilla.
