As a seasoned cinema enthusiast with over three decades of movie-watching under my belt, I must say that the casting debate for Hal Jordan in the upcoming “Lanterns” series has certainly stirred up some passionate opinions. Having watched Josh Brolin’s transformative performance as Thanos and his gritty portrayal of a grizzled detective in Dune, I can definitely see him fitting the bill for an experienced, world-weary Hal Jordan.

Although it seems the DC Universe has found its new Green Lantern, Hal Jordan, in Josh Brolin (from Dune), not everyone is thrilled with this potential casting. It was recently announced that Brolin has been given an offer for the role in the upcoming Lanterns series, although he hasn’t accepted it yet. The fact that a formal contract has been extended suggests there may have been some interest from Brolin. Even though Brolin is an A-list actor with experience in successful superhero movies (having played Thanos in Avengers: Infinity War and Endgame), DC fans are expressing dissatisfaction with the casting choice.

Frequently, dissatisfied spectators expressed their disappointment about Broliz’s possible role as Green Lantern‘s Hal Jordan on X. One of the funniest responses came from user @TrulyTigress, who referenced an old Deadpool 2 interview involving Ryan Reynolds and Brolin. In a poorly received 2011 film, Reynolds played Hal Jordan as Green Lantern. The video clip captures Brolin making harsh jokes about Reynolds’ performance in a “Playground Insults” game, but the caption flips the script on Brolin.

As a devoted fan, I’ve noticed numerous fellow enthusiasts expressing their ideal choices for the Hal Jordan role. Names such as Jake Gyllenhaal, James Marsden, Bradley Cooper, and Josh Hutcherson are regularly mentioned as perfect fits. However, some fans believe that Josh Brolin, who is currently 56, might be too old to portray Jordan on screen. @milkias_samuel expressed this sentiment by saying, “I feel like there are so many better roles for Josh Brolin in the DCU other than Hal Jordan.” On the other hand, @SchwayJohn suggested that if they wanted a 50s version of Hal Jordan, Marsden would be ideal. They also proposed that Brolin could be a great fit as Deathstroke within the DCU, stating, “Bro, tone it down! I’m dead serious.”

There’s quite a bit of debate among internet users regarding Josh Brolin as Hal Jordan in the upcoming Lanterns series, which has been compared to a mystery akin to True Detective, set within DC Comics’ intergalactic police force. This setup has sparked some fans’ imagination, leading them to envision Brolin as an older, rugged Hal Jordan working alongside a younger John Stewart. Twitter user @GrayHarden77 succinctly captured the idea, stating, “”An older, seasoned Hal Jordan teaming up with a young John Stewart to solve a murder. It’s like a space-set combination of Lethal Weapon and True Detective. I’d love to hear Brolin say ‘I’m too old for this sh*t.’ I’m on board.”

Some believe that Josh Brolin’s portrayal of Hal Jordan could offer the maturity and background needed to depict a veteran test pilot who joins the founding ranks of the Justice League. User @LanternsCreed expressed hope that, if Brolin takes the role, his Green Lantern character will be established as an original member of the Justice League, as that is who Hal Jordan truly is. Meanwhile, @nickuva finds Brolin’s casting as Hal Jordan to be a brilliant decision, as test pilots are typically not young hotshots but rather seasoned professionals. Furthermore, they believe that Brolin can convey the menacing and arrogant undertones expected from this character without resorting to the comedic portrayals seen in recent animated adaptations of the character.

Written by Chris Mundy, Damon Lindelof, and Tom King, the new series titled Lanterns is slated for release as an original production on HBO in the coming year.
