Mia Farrow ‘Understands’ Actors Who Still Choose to Work with Woody Allen

Mia Farrow 'Understands' Actors Who Still Choose to Work with Woody Allen

As a seasoned film critic who’s seen more movies than I can count on one hand (and a few on the other), I must say that the saga of Woody Allen is as intriguing off-screen as it is on. The man has an uncanny ability to weave captivating narratives, but his personal life seems straight out of a screenplay that’s far too dark for Hollywood.

Pauses to consider if collaborators may still wish to work with Woody Allen, given his past controversies; this is surprising considering that he was involved in a 12-year romantic relationship with Mia Farrow, which ended when she found nude photos of her adopted daughter Soon-Yi Previn taken by Allen. After their breakup, things between them deteriorated further. Dylan Farrow, then 7, who is Allen’s adoptive daughter, made allegations of molestation against him

While appearing on CBS Sunday Mornings on September 1, journalist Seth Doane asked Farrow:

As a cinephile, I often ponder about this question myself: “Can you truly distinguish the on-screen role from the off-screen struggles and hardships that might ensue afterwards?”

Farrow responded:

“Absolutely, I can see why an actor might choose to collaborate with him. I wouldn’t be the one to discourage them from doing so.”

While the Connecticut State Attorney’s Office investigated the allegation made by Dylan and her mother, they never formally pressed charges. Following the allegation (which became public during a contentious custody battle between Allen and Farrow), Allen continued to work in Hollywood as a prominent filmmaker, adding acclaimed films like Bullets Over Broadway, Mighty Aphrodite, Deconstructing Harry, Match Point, Midnight in Paris, and Blue Jasmine to his already impressive list of credits (that included Annie Hall, Manhattan, Hannah and Her Sisters, and Radio Days).

Actors Decry Woody Allen

2014 saw renewed media attention on sexual misconduct accusations against Woody Allen, when he received an honor at the Golden Globes Awards. Following this recognition, Ronan Farrow, Allen’s son, tweeted about the past allegation. A month later, a letter written by Dylan detailing her claims of abuse against Allen was published in The New York Times. In this article, Dylan spoke about her experiences and criticized some actors who had worked with Allen

Over time, particularly after the rise of the Times Up and #MeToo campaigns, actors and spectators grew increasingly conscious about the accusations against Allen. Some prominent actors and viewers started expressing opposition towards the filmmaker. Notable figures like Kate Winslet, Colin Firth, Greta Gerwig, Timothée Chalamet, and Rebecca Hall openly expressed regret over working with Allen. Chalamet and Hall went a step further by donating their earnings from collaborations with Allen to the Time’s Up organization

Indeed, there are several individuals who have spoken up in support of Allen, among them are actors Wallace Shawn and Gina Gershon from the film “Rifkin’s Festival”. Scarlett Johansson, who collaborated with Allen on films like “Match Point”, “Scoop”, and “Vicky Cristina Barcelona”, expressed her affection for him in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter in 2019, stating that she trusted him and would work with him again at any time. Johansson’s co-star from “Vicky Cristina Barcelona”, Javier Bardem, has also defended Allen, cautioning against making accusations without legal proof, adding that it’s just speculation or gossip

Prior to their stormy split, Woody Allen and Mia Farrow collaborated on thirteen films, starting with “A Midsummer Night’s Sex Comedy” in 1982 and ending with “Husbands and Wives” in 1992. In 1997, Allen married Soon-Yi; they have been together ever since and are parents to two children. Allen continues to deny the allegations made by Farrow and Dylan

The four-part documentary series titled “Allen vs. Farrow,” which delved into the private account of sexual abuse allegations against Allen that made headlines for years, can now be streamed on HBO Max
