As a long-time fan of James Gunn’s unique storytelling and his knack for breathing new life into obscure characters, I am beyond excited for the release of “Creature Commandos”! Having grown up on classics like Batman and Superman, it’s refreshing to see a fresh take on an ensemble cast that isn’t just human.
In James Gunn’s freshly minted DC Universe, the much-anticipated animated series titled “Creature Commandos” has officially set a launch date. Starting on Thursday, December 5, this seven-episode series will make its grand debut on Max. Each subsequent episode will air weekly, concluding on January 16. While July’s initial trailer hinted at a December release, the specific premiere date was kept under wraps until now, allowing fans to finally mark their calendars for an exciting viewing experience
Characters from certain past DCEU series continue to appear, such as Peacemaker under Gunn’s direction. However, Creature Commandos marks the debut of a show exclusively set within the new DC Universe. Viola Davis reprises her role as Amanda Waller following her portrayal in multiple DCEU productions. Sean Gunn, Gunn’s brother, lends his voice to both GI Robot and Weasel for this series; Weasel made an appearance in The Suicide Squad of 2021. Although Creature Commandos is the first official production, it’s likely that the live-action Superman film will be seen as the beginning by most viewers
What is Creature Commandos about?
If you aren’t overly familiar with the details of Creature Commandos, that’s perfectly understandable since its main characters may not have achieved the same level of recognition as figures such as Batman, Superman, or Wonder Woman. However, Gunn’s Creature Commandos focuses on a covert team of monsters who are tasked with missions too risky for humans to handle. In essence, it’s like the Suicide Squad, but instead featuring an entire cast of non-human characters. Given James Gunn’s track record of breathing life into unconventional characters and making them popular, this series is sure to be something DCU fans won’t want to miss
An additional point to note is that while it’s an animated series, it’s not intended for young viewers as it contains adult content, similar to the DC animated show “Harley Quinn”. The series, titled Creature Commandos, carries an R-rating due to its graphic violence and strong language. The question now is how it will fit into the larger universe, much like the Marvel Cinematic Universe TV shows connect to their films. However, it’s uncertain how the DCU plans to integrate such content. Gunn’s “Superman” is already laying groundwork for future storylines within the universe by introducing characters like Lex Luthor, Supergirl, Green Lantern, and Hawkgirl, among others. Incorporating characters from Creature Commandos may pose a challenge in this context
In a broader collection titled Chapter One: Gods and Monsters, both Superman and Creature Commandos are included. Just like how the Marvel Cinematic Universe organizes its series in phases, Creature Commandos marks the beginning of the TV shows within this chapter, while Superman is the inaugural film. It’s possible that these stories may not directly intersect, as we’ve observed hints of this separation in earlier works. For instance, Peacemaker Season 1 largely stood alone from the DC universe, with Justice League characters making a brief appearance in the finale for a cameo. However, the details regarding interaction between these projects will become clear once they are unveiled
Superman is scheduled for a theatrical release on July 11, 2025.
