As a long-time spacefarer and survivor of the treacherous cosmos, I can’t help but feel a mix of emotions as I pen these words. The clones, led by Milos, have shown a relentless spirit, a burning desire for freedom, and a readiness to do whatever it takes to establish their own colony – even if it means leaving a trail of bodies in their wake. They’ve been through hell, experimented upon, tortured, and mined for parts by the Global Space Administration (GSA). It’s no wonder they distrust anyone associated with the GSA, including us, the crew of Ark One.

There’s an uprising on board The Ark! However, it’s not your typical mutiny; instead, it can be described as a tragic mishap of humanitarian efforts that turned lethal. In the latest episode of SYFY’s popular space series, titled “We Don’t Kill Our Own,” Captain Sharon Garnet (Christie Burke) and her crew on Ark One face an unexpected challenge from some unappreciative refugees – individuals they had only recently attempted to help by rescuing them from a dangerous planet in the previous episodes

After the shocking revelation about trusted ally Eva (Tiana Upcheva) being linked to the malicious Eastern Federation faction last week, Garnet is struggling to cope and decide her next move. Meanwhile, people on board the Ark One mysteriously collapse without warning. The question is, what could possibly be causing this strange phenomenon?

As a devoted viewer, I recall a fleeting moment in last week’s episode where some cloned refugees rescued from Raynick-J secretly made their way into the Ark One’s medical bay and pilfered a vast cache of pills. This week, we uncovered their true intentions: It appears they aim to exploit the sedative properties of these pills to create an airborne mixture, which they plan to introduce into the Ark One’s air supply system, rendering everyone aboard unconscious

Guided by an unscrupulous individual named Milos (Kieran Mortell), a group of untrustworthy clones put on protective masks and wait as their malicious actions spread across Ark One. Once most people have passed out, these clones rush to the command deck, where they deactivate faster-than-light travel and plot a new course for a planet they aim to colonize under their own clone rules (regrettably, these terms do not include any survival of the Ark One crew)

Despite believing they were alone aboard the ship, the clones hadn’t factored in Angus (Ryan Adams) and security chief Felix (Pavle Jerinić), who managed to avoid the effects of the sedative by coincidentally being present when it was dispersed within the ship’s isolated bio-shelter. Furthermore, they hadn’t anticipated Kelly Fowler (Samantha Glassner), whose nanite-enhanced blood and enhanced physique made her immune to their homemade sleeping solution

Garnet collapses under the influence of the airborne knockout agent, similar to everyone else, yet manages to gather her remaining energy to locate Kelly’s remote augment controller and press the button that activates all of Kelly’s abilities. With Kelly’s remarkable talents now in full force, she fights through to reach the medical bay, awakening a portion of the main crew to initiate a response strategy – simultaneously contacting Felix and Angus in the bio-shelter for crucial support

Once Dr. Kabir (Shalini Peiris) and Dr. Marsh (Jadran Malkovich) regain consciousness, their group devises a plan to concoct an airborne antidote to rouse everyone on the ship. However, there’s a catch: The fine powder necessary for the airborne antidote is stored in the bio-shelter (where Felix and Angus are). Retrieving it from there means navigating through an uncertain number of hostile clones to reach the medical bay

It’s thrilling to observe Alicia (Stacey Read) respond as Kelly steps up to protect the rest of the group. Kelly’s enhanced abilities are remarkably advanced, and as she battles through the ship’s hallways, Alicia finds herself incredibly relieved that Kelly – who has often been an unpredictable character in the past – has chosen to align with the Ark One’s righteous team… this time, it appears, for a noble cause

During a recent discussion on the post-episode broadcast of “After the Ark“, Glassner mentioned that Alicia and Kelly are, in essence, running around the ship, fighting villains and rescuing people. This moment, amidst the chaos and turmoil, is significant for Kelly, who, due to her frosty upbringing, has had limited chances to form genuine connections with the crew. Glassner expressed that he enjoyed seeing Kelly develop new friendships and relationships, particularly between her and Alicia. He admitted that he really wants them to become friends!

Following intense battles and narrow escapes, it appears the gang’s antidote is prepared for release into the air circulation system within the spaceship, just as Lt. Brice (Richard Fleeshman) and his assistant in maintenance, Sasha (Miloš Cvetković), concoct a risky strategy to disrupt the clones’ planetary trajectory by igniting the engines from one of the docked shuttles aboard Ark One. Remarkably, none of the crew on Ark One yet comprehends why the clones have seized their vessel or if they can successfully reclaim it with their counterattack plan

Why did the clones take over the Ark One?

While the duplicates have seized control over Garnet, they’ve forced her to awaken and demanded the ship’s command codes to govern the vessel during their extended interplanetary voyage. Although spectators may suspect their true intentions, Garnet becomes the first on Ark One to learn about the clones’ covert activities: Milos and his “clone relatives” (as he refers to them) will go to great lengths to secure complete liberation and found a clone settlement on their personal planet, even if it results in casualties among the human crew. Milos guarantees Garnet that they won’t harm their own kind (given her separate cloned lineage created by Earth’s Global Space Administration). However, he makes no such pledge for the rest of Ark One’s human passengers

“We were subjected to tests, endured torment, and had our resources exploited by the GSA, and now you expect us to rely on a GSA team?” Milos challenges Garnet. “I appreciate your aid, sincerely. However, we will never surrender control of our lives again – not even to someone controlled by the GSA!”

Absolutely, these replicas are fully dedicated to winning or at least fighting until the end, but they’re running out of time. This becomes a significant issue once Dr. Kabir releases the antidote into the air, awakening the ship’s entire crew from their slumber. Garnet plays her role decisively, breaking free from restraints and engaging in combat with Milos and his associates on the bridge. She even receives unexpected aid from Ian, a rogue refugee who bears a genetic resemblance to Lt. Spencer Lane (also portrayed by Reece Ritchie). Ian has been biding his time, waiting for the perfect moment to inform his fellow clones that he won’t betray the Ark One team, who saved them all from imminent death on the radioactive planet Raynick-J

Due to some skillful (and deadly) knife handling by Garnet, it seems that Milos meets his last end as the ship regains complete control under the crew’s command. However, despite his questionable actions, Milos can be seen as having a somewhat compassionate heart – in a twisted kind of way. This is because he and the other rescued clones have experienced horrific events during their oppressed lives at the hands of the GSA. Mortell from After the Ark elaborated on Milos’ complex motivations, stating that “he carries a lot of trauma related to what happened to these people when they were created in the labs.” In essence, Milos is eager for battle, ready to fight against his oppressors and seek revenge

The Ark‘s new threat: The Eastern Federation

At the close of this week’s installment, the clones are subdued and authority over Ark One is once again with its legitimate rulers. Garnet and their companions take a deserved break, as Brice hurries to locate Eva (who had minimal screen time throughout the episode) and expresses his undying loyalty, stating that even if her questionable Eastern Federation history might imply otherwise, he would never abandon her. “To be honest,” Brice exclaims affectionately to Eva, “If you were to turn purple, it wouldn’t make a difference.” This tender moment between them stirs heartwarming emotions (finally bringing some cheer and laughter) as their long-standing romantic feelings rekindle

In classic Ark One style, things are as snug as a bug in a rug, but just when we glance out the window, there’s an enormous Eastern Federation ship hulking on our horizon. Not only that, it’s preparing to unleash a formidable, fiery space cannon. Could this be the long-awaited confrontation with the ominous leaders of the EF faction? Or will Garnet and the crew manage to dodge this bullet before being obliterated completely?
