As a seasoned gamer who has traversed the digital landscapes of time, I can’t help but feel a sense of nostalgia when Steve Jackson’s F.I.S.T. makes its triumphant return to the gaming world. This is not just a game, it’s a piece of history, a testament to the ingenuity of the early gaming era.

Sound Realms audio RPG is ready to breathe new life into one of the less recognized yet significant phone games from the past as Steve Jackson’s F.I.S.T. starts its journey on September 7th. This interactive story takes inspiration from the Fighting Fantasy game series, allowing you to navigate through the enigmatic and dangerous Castle Mammon at your own pace.

Steve Jackson, who is distinct from another well-known Steve Jackson in the tabletop gaming world, co-founded Games Workshop and collaborated with phone company Computerdial to create F.I.S.T., or Fantasy Interactive Scenarios by Telephone, as far back as 1988.

You follow an audio narration and sound effects, which serve as your guide as you navigate through Castle Mammon with the goal of vanquishing the demon prince Kaddis Ra. Along the way, you encounter choices similar to those in a choose-your-own-adventure book, and these decisions can lead to exciting rewards or tragic outcomes.

In old times, such tasks were carried out by pressing a specific number on your phone’s keypad (or rotary dial), but today, you can experience F.I.S.T. effortlessly with your touchscreen, all while avoiding those hefty phone bills!

A mailed F.I.S.T.

It’s interesting to note that I have several vintage editions of White Dwarf (the tabletop roleplaying magazine from Games Workshop), even before it shifted its focus to Warhammer. Among the recurring ads I stumbled upon while flipping through these historic issues, there was one for F.I.S.T., which always caught my attention. What intrigued me was how widespread roleplaying over the phone was back then, a fact that still surprises me.

It’s truly astounding just how innovative it was, there was even a line called The Black Claw Tavern where you could converse with other players! No word yet on if that’ll make a return, or if the top-scoring players in F.I.S.T. will receive a gold coin for their efforts.
