Annapurna President Nathan Gary Exits (Exclusive)

As a long-time admirer of Annapurna and its innovative approach to entertainment across various platforms, I find myself reflecting on the recent changes within the company. The departure of Nathan Gary, who played a pivotal role in establishing Annapurna’s gaming division, marks an interesting turn of events for this dynamic entity.

Nathan Gary has chosen to resign from his position as president at Megan Ellison’s Annapurna, a role he assumed in 2021. According to The Hollywood Reporter, this decision also includes Gary leaving the company altogether.

Deborah Mars and Nathan Vella, who serve as the joint leaders of Annapurna’s independent gaming sector, are planning to leave as well.

Hector Sanchez, newly appointed President of Interactive and New Media at Epic Games following his recent hire, will now lead the company’s game development initiatives. Meanwhile, Annapurna Studios is aiming to venture into the realm of AAA (large-budget) video games.

With Ellison and her top management leading the way, the company plans to merge its internal gaming units with other sectors such as film, television, and theatre under Annapurna’s umbrella.

After serving as Interactive Chief, Gary was promoted to the presidency, being instrumental in establishing Annapurna’s gaming division from scratch. In recent years, Annapurna has risen significantly in the independent gaming industry, creating critically acclaimed indie games such as ‘What Remains of Edith Finch’ and ‘Stray’. The latter game sold millions of units within its first month on sale and was awarded the gaming world’s top honor, similar to an Oscar, in 2022.

Despite experiencing financial troubles in 2019 and 2020, Annapurna is gearing up for the premiere of Marielle Heller’s highly anticipated horror comedy, “Nightbitch,” featuring Amy Adams, at the Toronto International Film Festival. Notably, Annapurna has recently distributed Netflix’s Oscar-nominated animated feature, “Nimona,” and the animated TV series “Sausage Party: Foodtopia” on Amazon. In theater, they have been instrumental in producing Sarah Paulson’s Tony Award-winning play “Appropriate” and are preparing for the West End staging of the play “Dear England” about football manager Gareth Southgate.
