PETA Activists Protest Pharrell Williams ‘Piece By Piece’ Press Screening at Toronto Film Festival

As a longtime fan and admirer of Pharrell Williams’ incredible talent, I find it disheartening to learn about the recent protests by PETA at the Toronto Film Festival regarding his use of animal skins and furs in his fashion collections.

On Saturday morning, animal rights activists from PETA staged a protest during the press screening of the animated documentary titled “Piece by Piece,” which focuses on singer-songwriter and record producer Pharrell Williams, at the Toronto Film Festival.

The demonstrators waved signs with slogans like “Fur has Ended” and “Pharrell, Cease Slaughtering Animals for Fashion”, imploring Williams, who additionally serves as Louis Vuitton’s men’s design director, to halt the incorporation of animal hides and furs in his fashion lines.

Amanda Brody, a representative for PETA, expressed her concerns to The Hollywood Reporter about designer John Galliano’s disregard for animal welfare by incorporating real fur, alligator, and snake skins into his fashion lines. According to Brody, PETA urges against the use of any type of animal hides or furs, as every instance where they are used – even by brands like Louis Vuitton – results in an animal living a miserable life and experiencing a cruel death.

Brody stated that Pharrell appears to be disregarding fake furs and leather as compassionate alternatives. He commented, “Pharrell is aware of this fact, but he continues to hold on to outdated, inhumane practices, rather than adopting kinder, animal-friendly advancements.

Activists advocating for animal rights congregated exterior Scotiabank Theatre on Richmond Street, as that’s where filmmaker Morgan Neville’s movie “Piece by Piece” was being shown following its global debut at Telluride.

Over the past few years, PETA activists have staged protests at the Toronto Film Festival against sponsor Canada Goose for incorporating real fur in their product line, such as warm fur-trimmed jackets. However, following these demonstrations, Canada Goose declared they would discontinue producing items with fur. As more designers and clothing brands shift towards compassionate alternatives, synthetic furs and animal-friendly materials are becoming popular choices among them, opting for faux fur and cruelty-free textiles instead.

The story of Williams’ career as a singer and producer is depicted using LEGO figurines in Neville’s animated film Piece by Piece, featuring the voices of Gwen Stefani, Kendrick Lamar, and Jay-Z. This movie recently made its debut at Telluride.
