After Denzel Washington Says There's Not Much He Wants To Do As An Actor Anymore, His Family Opened Up About Working On Upcoming Movie With Him

As a long-time admirer and follower of Denzel Washington‘s illustrious career, I can confidently say that his contributions to the world of cinema are nothing short of extraordinary. With two Oscars, a Tony Award, and numerous other accolades under his belt, he has truly proven himself as one of the finest actors of our time.

Known for his exceptional acting skills, Denzel Washington stands among the world’s greatest actors, a fact easily understood by many. His career has spanned decades, providing audiences with memorable performances, and this talent has earned him two Oscars, a Tony Award, and numerous other accolades. With talks suggesting he might be nearing retirement, it seems that Washington is not done yet – his family recently shared news about working on an upcoming film alongside him.

What Did Denzel Washington Say About Possibly Retiring?

This year, expect to see the Training Day symbol represented by Macrinus in Ridley Scott’s much-anticipated Gladiator II. At 69 years old, this actor appears thrilled about working with Scott again, having previously collaborated on American Gangster in 2007. In an interview with Empire, the Philadelphia star hinted at his future in acting by expressing his enthusiasm for rejoining forces with Scott.

I find myself running out of compelling movie projects that catch my eye, and I need to feel motivated by the director, and Ridley Scott truly ignited that spark within me.

Over the years, it’s undeniable that I’ve had the privilege of witnessing the incredible talent that is Denzel Washington. He’s been gracing our screens for quite some time now, and it seems like there’s nothing he can’t do!

It would be just as unfortunate as can be if the star of Mo’ Better Blues were to retire, but given the circumstances, it would certainly be comprehensible. After all, he still has work left to do, and his most recent film project holds a deep personal significance for him.

The Washington Family Shared Thoughts On Working With Their Patriarch

2024 brings an exciting new venture as I step into the role of producer for “The Piano Lesson,” a movie adaptation of August Wilson’s renowned play. This project is particularly special because it involves several members of my family, including my son Malcolm who makes his directorial debut with this film. At its premiere at Telluride Film Festival, Malcolm shared some insights about collaborating with me and other family members on this remarkable production.

This movie holds a special place in my heart because it felt like I was living my own story, and working with the team was like being surrounded by family. My mother was at the heart of it all, making this production a deeply personal journey for me.

In addition, John David Washington significantly contributes to the movie, sharing screen time with Samuel L. Jackson and Ray Fisher from Justice League. Denzel Washington’s wife, Pauletta, and their daughter, Olivia, portray similar characters in the film. The family’s other daughter, Katia, is also credited as an executive producer on this project. Recently, Deadline had a chat with Pauletta at Telluride, where she expressed her excitement about collaborating with her kin on the upcoming dramatic movie.

Every child I have is part of this project. My boy is the one who’s directing it, while John David is an actor in it. The same goes for Olivia – she and I are playing the same character but at different stages of life. Lastly, let me introduce Katia as well.

It’s clear that Mrs. Washington takes great pride in her family, especially their collaboration on the film “The Piano Lesson.” Set in 1930s Pittsburgh following the Great Depression, the movie revolves around the Charles family, who grapple with the decision of what to do with their treasured piano. The play upon which the film is based was awarded the Pulitzer Prize for Drama in 1990, making it a revered piece of literature. Ultimately, Pauletta trusts her husband has the skill to bring this silver-screen adaptation to life.

It would be hard to find someone more suitable than my husband for ensuring that all work receives due respect.

Her assumption isn’t far-fetched, and this isn’t the first August Wilson adaptation that Denzel Washington has been involved with. He previously directed, produced and starred in the Oscar-winning film Fences and also served as a producer on the Academy Award-nominated Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom. So he was more than equipped to handle this material, and it’s sweet that he was able to do it alongside his spouse and kids. I’m not sure how much longer Washington will be acting but, if he continues to produce, I wouldn’t be surprised if he teams up with his relatives again at some point.

Beginning November 8, “The Piano Lesson” will run in select theaters for a brief period. Later, on November 22, it will be accessible to Netflix subscribers. Interestingly, that same day is when “Gladiator II” hits the theaters, promising fans an intense serving of Denzel Washington’s talent.
