Creative Arts Emmys: Angela Bassett Gets First Win After Nine Nominations

As a long-time fan of Angela Bassett, it is nothing short of inspiring to witness her journey and accomplishments. Her latest Emmy win for best narrator, especially after initially turning down the project, is a testament to her dedication and versatility as an artist. It’s a reminder that even the most enticing vacation can be overshadowed by a compelling script and a good cause!

At the 2024 Creative Arts Emmys held on a Saturday, Angela Bassett won the Emmy Award for Best Narrator – marking her first time receiving this honor. This recognition came as a result of her exceptional work in the National Geographic series titled Queens.

Feels amazing; truly extraordinary, I must say! A big thank you goes out to National Geographic, Wild Star Film, and all the female directors who brought this breathtaking story, this captivating docuseries about the fierce and awe-inspiring aspects of nature’s realm. I couldn’t be more ecstatic or appreciative!” (as a gamer speaking in first person)

Initially, Bassett turned down the project during her chat with The Hollywood Reporter, stating that “The summer had arrived, marking a break for 9-1-1. It had been an exhausting season. I was eagerly anticipating a vacation with my family and some personal time away from work as it’s a constant roller coaster. However, they reached out again and presented me with the project’s sizzle reel, and I agreed to give it my full focus for a while to understand its essence. Upon closer inspection, I couldn’t ignore it.

The seven-episode series titled “Queens” narrates tales of matriarchal societies among various animal species worldwide. Remarkably, this production boasts an all-female crew, making it one of the key attractions as stated by Bassett to THR.

Bassett expressed that she didn’t perform the work for these awards, but rather, they were given as a result of her hard labor. She acknowledged that while it may appear to be individual effort due to narration, there is a whole team behind her who supported, advocated for, and collaborated with her to tell an extraordinary tale about females in the wild kingdom, a story led by an all-female crew, a first in wildlife documentary filmmaking. This aspect was particularly motivating for her.

In sum, Bassett has garnered a grand total of nine Emmy nominations. Among these, she was recently nominated in the category of ‘Best Narrator’ for the year 2023, thanks to her exceptional work on the production titled Good Night Oppy.
