Juliette Binoche Says She Felt “Brother and Sister” With Ralph Fiennes Reuniting for ‘The Return’

As a long-time admirer of cinematic artistry and a dedicated follower of the careers of some of Hollywood’s most esteemed actors, I found myself utterly captivated by the reunion of Ralph Fiennes and Juliette Binoche in the classical drama “The Return.” Having first graced our screens together in the Oscar-winning masterpiece “The English Patient,” their chemistry was palpable even over a quarter-century later.

25 years after their collaboration in the Academy Award-winning film “The English Patient,” Ralph Fiennes and Juliette Binoche came together once more to take on the lead roles in the classical drama “The Return.” This highly anticipated production made its grand debut at the Toronto Film Festival on Saturday evening.

Although Fiennes couldn’t attend TIFF due to acting obligations in Britain, Binoche honored her co-star by pointing out their shared traits, even though they originate from distinct nations and cultures.

Every time I collaborate with him (Fiennes), it’s a rhythmic experience – the balance of spoken words, the power of unsaid moments, and the tranquility that lingers. It feels incredibly authentic,” I shared with the audience at Roy Thomson Hall after receiving a quick yet heartfelt standing ovation following the end of The Return.

Binoche, originally from France, expressed that despite playing husband and wife in this movie, she feels more like they’re siblings. They share many similarities, even though they reside in different nations, speak different languages, are of opposite genders, and have distinct educational backgrounds,” Fiennes, hailing from the U.K., was described as having by Binoche.

Prior to Toronto, Bleecker Street acquired the North American distribution rights for “The Return”, a modern adaptation of Homer’s epic “Odyssey”. In this rendition, Fiennes portrays King Odysseus, who has aged significantly since departing to wage war at Troy. His devoted spouse, Penelope (Binoche), is confined within her own home and pressured to select a fresh husband and a new ruler.

In the story, young Telemachus, portrayed by Charlie Plummer, no longer trusts his father and finds himself threatened by the persistent suitors. These suitors are after Penelope and the rule of the kingdom, viewing Telemachus as an inconvenience that must be removed.

Pasolini, known for directing “Nowhere Special” and producing “The Full Monty”, led the production of this film based on a screenplay he co-authored with Edward Bond and John Collee.

1997 saw Juliette Binoche receiving the Silver Bear award for Best Actress, which she earned for her exceptional performance in Anthony Minghella’s film, “The English Patient.” This movie was an adaptation of Michael Ondaatje’s novel and depicted a French-Canadian nurse (played by Binoche) who provided care to an Englishman with severe burns who had forgotten his name, a character portrayed by Fiennes in the film.

During a post-screening Q&A, Binoche revealed that while watching “The Return“, she recognized Fiennes as the wounded character from “The English Patient” and their recent project together. “The unique aspect,” she commented, “is that I once took care of him over two decades ago, but now I had to wait to work with him again.

At the Oscars ceremony, “The English Patient” ended up winning nine out of the twelve categories it was nominated in. Among these victories were the prestigious awards for Best Picture, Best Supporting Actress (won by Binoche), and Best Director (Minghella).

The Return, a collaborative production among Italy, Greece, the U.K., and France, features Red Wave Films (produced by Pasolini and James Clayton), Picomedia’s Roberto Sessa, Rai Cinema, Heretic (with Giorgos Karnavas and Konstantinos Kontovravkis as producers), and Kabo Films and Marvelous Production (produced by Stéphane Moatti, Romain Le Grand, Vivien Aslanian, and Marco Pacchioni).

Andrew Karpen and Kent Sanderson executive produce for Bleecker Street.
