Stree 2's Abhishek Banerjee opens up about credit war for the Rajkummar-Shraddha starrer; 'We have to grow up as an audience and industry'

As a seasoned film enthusiast and connoisseur of Bollywood gossip, I find myself deeply moved by Abhishek Banerjee’s heartfelt words about the credit war in Stree 2. His perspective, rooted in years of industry experience, resonates profoundly with me. The camaraderie he describes among the cast is a breath of fresh air in an environment often rife with petty squabbles and unnecessary drama.

The second installment of Street, starring Shraddha Kapoor and Rajkummar Rao, has become a massive box office success. Lately, whispers of disagreements among the principal cast members have been spreading. However, Abhishek Banerjee, who was also part of the movie, has dismissed these rumors, saying that there is no tension. He added, “It’s time for us to grow up as an audience and as an industry.

In a conversation with PTI, Abhishek Banerjee discussed the current battle over credits, highlighting the close bond within the cast. He pointed out that often, actors receive credit for films, but he believes the industry should grow beyond this practice. He clarified that filmmaking is primarily the director’s realm and that the success or failure of a movie hinges significantly on the director’s decisions.

He noted that the importance of credit can sometimes be overstated in our industry because of the inclination towards idolizing heroes. Essentially, he suggested, we make things seem more complex than they are due to our affection for hero worship. In his words, “We add layers of complexity because we love hero worship in this nation. The director is like the captain. If you ask the staff and crew, they’ll tell you it’s Amar, Niren Bhatt, and Dinesh Vijan who should be in the spotlight first. Once you recognize them, then the focus comes to us.

Abhishek Banerjee spoke about the idea of a ‘credit war’ among the cast members, expressing bewilderment over how such a storyline develops. He clarified that when public relations efforts from various sources give the impression of conflict, it doesn’t accurately represent the relationships between the actors. Instead, he emphasized that they genuinely appreciate and have fun together.

Banerjee stated that rumors of conflict arose following the movie’s success, as some tried to cast a negative light on it. However, he clarified that there is no disagreement among them and expressed, “We are enjoying ourselves, having fun. Shraddha is thriving, Raj celebrated his birthday, Apar is spending time with family, I’m hanging out with my friends. Yet, the world claims there’s a battle. Everyone is coexisting peacefully; where is this war?

Previously, Director Amar Kaushik discussed the credit dispute, explaining to India Today that such debates frequently flare up on social media, where fans passionately debate which actors deserve all the recognition for a film’s success. He highlighted that this is a common phenomenon and that disputes over credits on social media are typical. Kaushik clarified that when a film becomes successful, those around the stars often fuel these claims, potentially shaping how the cast views the situation.

In the theaters now, I’m excitedly watching “Stree 2,” a thrilling follow-up to the 2018 hit, “Stree.” This time around, I see Shraddha Kapoor, Rajkummar Rao, Aparshakti Khurana, Pankaj Tripathi, and Abhishek Banerjee stepping into pivotal roles. Just like the original, this film continues to mesmerize with its one-of-a-kind narrative. While the first installment focused on a vengeful spirit haunting women who had been wronged in their lives, the sequel introduces a chilling new adversary: Sarkata, a headless antagonist that targets independent-minded women.
