Without anyone specifically asking for it, but moving forward nonetheless, HBO is developing the much-anticipated Harry Potter series, and they are currently on the hunt to cast the main trio: Harry Potter, Hermione Granger, and Ron Weasley. Over seven seasons, this remake will cover all seven books, allowing the new actors to grow alongside the release of the series. A recent casting call for the television adaptation of the beloved children’s fantasy book series is open to a broad and diverse pool of candidates for the leading roles.
HBO has disclosed that it is seeking candidates for its principal characters, as reported by Variety. The casting notice indicates that they are open to considering a wide range of talents for each position. Adhering to an “inclusive and diverse” approach, they welcome submissions from all qualified performers. Any child who falls within the age bracket of 9-11 years old in April 2025 (presumably when filming) is being considered for every role. The official casting call states:
For each role we consider, we welcome applications from talented individuals, regardless of their ethnicity, sex, ability, race, sexual orientation, gender identity, or any other characteristic protected by law. Who is Behind the Harry Potter Remake?
In the new HBO adaptation of the Harry Potter series, Francesca Gardiner from Succession will take on the role as showrunner, with Mark Mylod (also a Succession alum) directing multiple episodes. Unlike the original film cast, Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson, Rupert Grint, and all other original actors will not return to their roles. This series is solely based on the books, though it’s likely some iconic elements like music may be incorporated. The author J.K. Rowling will have a hand in the series, a fact that has left many die-hard Harry Potter fans disappointed due to her ongoing controversies. Despite not being present for the movie reunion and numerous disputes, Rowling remains connected to all things Harry Potter-related.
Living up to the high standards set by previous Harry Potter adaptations, particularly the successful eight-part movie series, will undeniably be a challenge for the upcoming HBO series. Regardless, the show is pushing forward, and soon we’ll discover who will step into the roles of the main trio. The fact that J.K. Rowling, who has faced criticism for her transphobic comments on social media, serves as an executive producer on the series continues to be a contentious issue among longtime fans. Despite assurances from HBO’s CEO that the show is separate from Rowling’s transphobia, there remains a sense of discomfort surrounding her involvement.
