Prince’s Music Companies Are “Working to Resolve Matters” Regarding Unreleased Doc Accusing Musician of Abuse

As a gamer who has spent countless hours immersed in the vibrant world of Prince’s music, I was saddened and disheartened to learn about the allegations of abuse against him. Like many fans, I idolized the late musician for his unique talent, innovative spirit, and rebellious nature. However, as someone who values truth and integrity above all else, it is crucial that we confront these difficult issues head-on.

On Monday afternoon, two businesses linked to Prince’s possessions, Primary Wave Music and The Prince Estate, issued a statement concerning allegations that an unpublished documentary implicates the deceased artist in instances of physical and emotional mistreatment.

The individuals entrusted with fulfilling Prince’s desires should respect his artistic brilliance,” the statement asserts. “We are making efforts to deal with issues surrounding the documentary in order to portray his story accurately, without distortion or exaggeration of facts about his life. We eagerly anticipate continuing to showcase Prince’s talents and commemorate the indelible mark he made on the world.

Last Sunday, a detailed article published by the New York Times Magazine unveiled that an unpublished nine-hour documentary from O.J.: Made in America director Ezra Edelman contained interviews with numerous ex-business partners, lovers, friends, and associates of the late Prince. These conversations, numbering in the dozens, included several claims of physical and emotional abuse against him.

The article detailed a continuous exchange, or debate, between the movie’s creators and Prince’s family regarding the release of the documentary. According to the New York Times, this project has been under development with Netflix for close to five years now.

The movie is said to feature an interview with Jill Jones, a former lover of Prince, who describes an incident where he physically assaulted her by slapping and punching her multiple times in the face. Additionally, Susannah Melvoin, another ex-partner, claims that after she moved in with him, Prince closely monitored her phone calls, forbade her from leaving the house, and attempted to isolate her from her sister. In a separate interview, Mayte Garcia, his former spouse, reportedly remembers being left alone following the death of their child, without any support from Prince.

In other interviews, it’s claimed that the well-known singer displayed controlling behavior and had experienced abuse during his childhood years. Yet, other accounts remember the singer fondly, making this one of Edelman’s most challenging assignments due to conflicting narratives.

He asked, ‘How can you know if a person is telling the truth when everyone you talk to seems to have a different story about them?’

In an interview with the New York Times, Netflix expressed that the project for this Prince documentary has been just as intricate and layered as the man himself. They’ve painstakingly gathered material from Prince’s life and have put in a great effort to assist Ezra in his series. However, there are lingering legal issues with the estate that are preventing the release of the documentary at this time.
