As a seasoned cinephile with over three decades of movie-watching under my belt, I must admit that I approached the premiere of Kevin Costner’s “Horizon: An American Saga – Chapter 2” with a mix of excitement and trepidation. Having followed the first installment with a keen interest, I was eager to see how Costner would develop his epic Western saga. Alas, the early reviews from Venice Film Festival have left me feeling more like a disappointed prospector than a hopeful pioneer.

Fans of Kevin Costner’s Western saga, “Horizon: An American Saga,” are still waiting for the second chapter to hit theaters, while a select group of critics have already seen it at this year’s Venice Film Festival. Initial reviews of the film are not promising. The second installment, titled “Horizon: An American Saga – Chapter 2, follows the birth of a new settlement in the wild west called Horizon. The first chapter received mixed reviews from critics and underperformed at the box office, but it found success on home video and streaming platforms, building a loyal fanbase who are eagerly anticipating the theatrical release of this second chapter.

After the debut of “Horizon: An American Saga – Chapter 2” at the Venice Film Festival, early reviews suggest trouble for Costner’s sequel. A limited number of reviews have been published thus far, with many more to come soon. However, the prospect of a more successful theatrical run than its predecessor for “Chapter 2” is becoming increasingly remote.

From my perspective, upon initial feedback, Chapter 2 appears to carry over the same challenges that weighed down its predecessor. As I followed various groups of characters on their journeys towards Horizon, I found that Costner was unable to seamlessly tie together each narrative strand, resulting in a film that feels disjointed and uneven. Robin Holabird, a renowned critic, expressed this sentiment eloquently: “Costner’s handling of the multiple narratives leaves the finished product feeling messy and choppy.

As a movie enthusiast, I was on the hunt for a grand narrative that truly embodied the epic tale suggested by its title. Unfortunately, in his attempt to weave together various locations and characters, Costner seemed to stumble, leaving some connections unclear and confusing the overall picture.

According to Stephanie Bunbury from Deadline, Chapter 2 had the capability of being far superior, but Kevin Costner fell short in realizing his initial creative concept.

Unfortunately, what we have is a series of anecdotes that don’t seem to connect or form a complete picture – at least not yet – of the chaotic creation of America as envisioned by Costner and his co-writer, John Baird.

Regrettably, despite favorable feedback for “Chapter 2,” it doesn’t represent a triumphant portrayal of the film’s achievements. Fionnuala Halligan, a critic from Screen International, remains optimistic about Costner’s saga, noting that “Chapter 2” effectively lays the groundwork for potential future chapters (if they ever come to fruition). However, she also points out that the storytelling in “Chapter 2” could use some refinement. In her own words:

Chapter 2, carefully planned, has a bit more action than the first. It’s reassuring to see that each villain will receive their comeuppance in this Western tale, as expected.

Right now, the movie titled “Horizon: An American Saga – Chapter 2” is scheduled to hit the big screens sometime in the year 2024.
