Mark Ruffalo, Major Actors Ask SAG-AFTRA To Protect Pro-Palestine Actors

As a seasoned movie enthusiast with decades of film history under my belt, I find myself deeply troubled by the recent turn of events in Hollywood. The case of Melissa Barrera and her ousting from the “Scream” franchise due to her support for Palestine is a stark reminder of the unfortunate reality that our industry is not always as open-minded as we’d like to believe.

A number of notable figures including Mark Ruffalo, Melissa Barrera, Ramy Youssef, and many others have penned an open appeal to SAG-AFTRA, advocating for the prevention of Hollywood blacklisting against actors expressing pro-Palestine sentiments. The ongoing conflict in Gaza has sparked public expressions of support from several celebrities, which some major studios have interpreted as grounds for exclusion. In the open letter sent to SAG-AFTRA, Barrera – a vocal supporter of Palestine who was ousted from the Scream series – joins other prominent union members in expressing her concerns about this issue.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, a large group of union actors led by Mark Ruffalo, Melissa Barrera, Ramy Youssef, and around 700 others have penned a letter to SAG-AFTRA and sister guilds. They are urging the guild’s leadership, specifically SAG-AFTRA president Fran Drescher, to safeguard pro-Palestine members from potential blacklisting and to advocate for a truce in Israel and Gaza. The letter also highlights the “grave human rights violations” being inflicted on Palestinians in Gaza, citing the numerous deaths and displacement of many more.

Numerous members from SAG-AFTRA and related unions have been appalled by Israel’s military campaign, which appears to be inflicting collective punishment on the civilian residents of Gaza. This operation has resulted in more than 40,000 fatalities, over 90,000 injuries, the displacement of approximately 2 million people, and blatant targeting of journalists and their families.

In their ongoing military operations, the Israeli Defense Forces are being criticized for targeting safe areas, schools, hospitals, and other civilian infrastructure, resulting in deaths due to starvation, dehydration, and lack of essential supplies like medical care and fuel. Major human rights organizations have accused these actions as war crimes, severe violations of human rights, and even acts of genocide. The United Nations has referred to Gaza as a place where children are suffering and dying excessively.

As a movie critic, I found myself grappling with the news that Melissa Barrera was let go from the upcoming “Scream” sequel following her public expressions of solidarity towards the Palestinian cause. The project, which has since taken a fresh creative route, appears to have moved past Barrera’s involvement, but it remains a striking instance of an actor being ousted due to their stance on the longstanding Middle Eastern conflict.

In the realm where I contribute my efforts, there seems to be an overemphasis on political correctness, which, in my opinion, strips away our genuine humanity and integrity. I yearn for more authentic interactions, where people feel free to express their true feelings without fear of judgment or reproach. Instead, let’s foster discussions that stimulate thoughtful debate, rather than arguments, enriching our collective understanding and empathy.

It’s regrettable that actors might face severe repercussions for expressing their backing of Palestine, which could negatively impact their careers in Hollywood. While Barrera may have a chance in the future with the Scream series, it’s almost impossible, despite her positive experiences behind the scenes. Skeet Ulrich, a former Scream actor, expressed his sympathy towards Barrera’s situation, discussing her termination and the slim prospects of his return to the franchise.

“I don’t know. I don’t really see a way that happens, but it’s a strange town. Who knows? I haven’t heard either way to be honest. I think it’s a sad state of affairs. [Melissa Barrera] was really just out for humanitarian reasons and suffers from it. It’s really sad to me . Everybody involved in that are such beautiful, caring, loving, empathetic people, and the labels are not fitting. So, it’s sad. I don’t know what’s coming down the line for Scream in general. I would imagine I’m probably out of it. But that’s okay. There’s more to do .”
