Growing up, Beetlejuice was one of those movies that made you laugh, gasp, and fall in love with its quirky charm. So, imagine my delight when I found myself once again in the small town of Winter River, Connecticut, this time through a scale model of the community!
Ever since Michael Keaton’s iconic portrayal of the mischievous poltergeist Beetlejuice graced our screens once again in Tim Burton’s grand cinematic extravaganza, I’ve been captivated by the worldwide surge of theater-goers eager to witness this spectacle. It’s a joyful return after 34 years for this unforgettable character! The sequel to the 1988 classic brings original film stars Winona Ryder and Catherine O’Hara together once more with Keaton, generating quite the buzz. This time, the story revolves around Lydia Deetz, now an adult, grappling with her supernatural talents while raising her rebellious teenage daughter, Astrid. Among the many highlights of the eagerly anticipated sequel, “Beetlejuice Beetlejuice“, stands out Catherine O’Hara’s captivating portrayal of Delia Deetz. Her performance as Lydia’s quirky stepmother was nothing short of mesmerizing and she undeniably stole the spotlight. The character was more fully developed in the horror-comedy, allowing her to truly shine, and fans were thrilled to see her interact more with the mischievous and sinister Betelgeuse.
Watching Delia confront Betelgeuse in the spiritual waiting area, unbothered by his mischievous ways but visibly irritated instead, had me in stitches. It was amusing to see her assert herself and adopt a fiery demeanor towards the supernatural world. Her transformation was quite entertaining. Delia served as a mentor for Lydia, often reminding her of her own rebellious past when she was like Astrid, causing trouble with her defiant attitude. The dynamic between Delia and Lydia completed the circle as Delia became a confidant to the troubled Lydia, offering advice and insights into Astrid’s behavior.
In the world of cinema, I couldn’t help but notice that Catherine O’Hara seemed to channel some of Moira Rose’s dramatic flair from Schitt’s Creek as Delia in this movie. Her performance during her emotional outbursts for an art project was nothing short of hilarious! She even took it upon herself to inform Astrid about the passing of her grandfather, and let me tell you, her theatrics were a sight to behold.
Burton Delivers a Heavy Dose of Nostalgia
Apart from O’Hara’s outstanding portrayal in the highly anticipated movie, viewers were delighted and reassured that the sequel managed to retain the charm and spirit of the initial film without attempting to transform into something it wasn’t. The 1988 classic had a meager budget of $15 million with only $1 million allocated for visual effects, and Tim Burton opted for stop-motion and puppetry to emulate the style of B movies and intentionally create effects that appeared low-budget and artificial. Contrasting this, Beetlejuice Beetlejuice had a significantly larger budget of $100 million, but Burton opted against relying on CGI and special effects to stay faithful to the original’s essence instead.
In the movie “Beetlejuice,” there are several nods to ’80s style, such as using Harry Belafonte’s classic song “Day-O” sung by a choir at Charles’ funeral. Similarly, Burton includes an extravagant musical performance during the film’s finale, where Betelgeuse and the Deetz girls perform a lively version of Richard Harris’ “Macarthur Park” at Delia’s wedding ceremony. Additionally, the opening scene of the sequel shows a camera sweeping over the small town of Winter River, Connecticut, which is also a miniature model of the community built by the Maitlands.
